| Phoenix, AZ (MySportsbook) - San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds, who missed six games following the death of his father, went 2-for-2 and hit his 40th home run of the season as he made an emotional return to the lineup in a 2-1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks at Bank One Ballpark. Former major leaguer Bobby Bonds passed away last Saturday at the age of 57 after losing a battle with cancer. Barry Bonds was placed on the bereavement list the following day. Bonds, who had reached on an infield single in the first inning, led off the fourth with a majestic blast into the right field seats off Randy Johnson to give the Giants a 2-0 lead in the contest. When he stepped on home plate, Bonds was visibly choked up as he made his customary point to the heavens and returned to the dugout. The solo shot gave Bonds seven career 40-homer seasons, just one shy of Hank Aaron's National League record of eight. Babe Ruth holds the major league record with 11 40-homer seasons. It was also Bonds' 653rd career home run, seven shy of Willie Mays for third on the all-time list. Bonds drew an intentional walk in the sixth and was replaced in left field by Jeffrey Hammonds in the bottom of the eighth. San Francisco pitcher Dustin Hermanson was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained back muscle to make room for Bonds. |
