Seattle Mariners Team Report - August 29 MLB Baseball 08/29/2003
=== Seattle Mariners Team Report - August 29 === (MySportsbook) - The reeling Mariners will try to put an end to their two- game losing streak tonight, when they take on the Baltimore Orioles in the first of a three-contest set at Safeco Field. Seattle has dropped eight of its last nine contests, including Thursday's 3-2 defeat to Tampa Bay. The Mariners have slipped two games behind first place Oakland in the West and now trail Boston by a half-game for the wild card. Shigetoshi Hasegawa (1-1) surrendered th

n up a three-game set against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays at the Coliseum. Thanks to their winning ways, the Athletics have grabbed a two-game advantage over Seattle in the West. Oakland continued its impressive play on Thursday with a 6-4 win over the Baltimore Orioles. Adam Melhuse hit a three-run homer to highlight a four-run first inning in the win. Scott Hatteberg hit a solo homer, while Terrence Long and Mark Ellis both collected two hits. Oakland has won 10 of its last 12 games overall. John Halama (3-4) wor

o has been sensational in his three starts this season. Since being moved into the starting rotation the 31-year-old righthander is 3-0, while allowing just two runs in 21 innings. Contreras was activated from the disabled list on Sunday to face the Baltimore Orioles after missing 67 games with a shoulder injury. He showed no signs of rust, scattering three hits over seven scoreless innings. He also struck out five and improved to 4-1 on the season, while lowering his earned run average to 3.62. === Oakland Athletics Team Report - August 28 === (MySportsbook) - Now in sole possession of first place, the Oakland Athletics try to give themselves some breathing room in the AL West when they conclude their three-game set with the Baltimore Orioles at the Coliseum. On Wednesday, Miguel Tejada belted two home runs and Barry Zito tossed eight strong innings, as Oakland downed the O's, 6-2. Eric Chavez also homered for the Athletics, who have won five straight and nine of their last 11 games. With the win Oa

He was roughed up for 10 runs on 11 hits in 5 1/3 innings The Yankees will counter with Mike Mussina, who had won his last three starts without allowing a run in his two previous outings before getting hammered by his former team, the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday. The 34-year-old righthander matched a season-high by allowing six runs on nine hits in 8 1/3 innings to fall to 14-7 on the year, while raising his earned run average to 3.18. He also struck out four without walking a batter and is thir

(Manny Ramirez, Trot Nixon, Nomar Garciaparra, Kevin Millar, Jason Varitek and David Ortiz). Bill Mueller has 16 homers, giving the Red Sox a chance to have seven different players connect for at least 20 homers. That would tie a major league record, shared by the 1996 Baltimore Orioles and the 2000 Toronto Blue Jays. LEFTHANDERS LEFT OUT - The last Montreal left-handed starter to earn a win was Matt Blank, June 21, 2001, in a 10-3 victory over the New York Mets at Shea Stadium. Blank's win came 385 games ago.

hill for the Devil Rays will be rookie righthander Chad Gaudin, who will be making the third start of his career. The 20-year-old hurler allowed a pair of runs and eight hits in 6 1/3 innings, but did not factor in the decision of his team's 5-4 loss to the Baltimore Orioles. Tampa has won four of the six games Gaudin has appeared in this season. His lone win came in a relief appearance against the Kansas City Royals back on August 7. Gaudin, who is 1-0 on the year with a 3.60 ERA, has never faced the Mariners.

ontinue their three-game set against Esteban Loaiza and the Chicago White Sox at Yankee Stadium. Wells, who has been hampered by a sore back, is winless in his last five starts and is coming off a loss in his most recent outing on Friday against the Baltimore Orioles. In that contest, the lefty allowed four runs and 10 hits, falling to 12-4 on the season while raising his earned run average to 3.96. The 40-year-old hurler, who pitched through an injury-plagued 2001 campaign for the Southsiders, is 8-7 against th
Cy Pettitte? MLB Baseball 08/26/2003
(MySportsbook) - You will be hard-pressed to find a better pitcher in the American League over the past two months than New York lefthander Andy Pettitte. The 31-year-old veteran picked up his 11th win in 12 decisions on Monday, as he limited the Baltimore Orioles to one run over 6 2/3 innings. It marked his third straight win and upped his record to 16-7 on the season. With a possible six starts the rest of the way, the hurler could have a shot at the second 20- win campaign of his career. "I won't even think of that," said Pettitte, who won 21 games for the Yankees during their 1996 World Championship season "With as many starts as I have left, I don't think it's realistic because you do get no-decisions and I've been getting a lot of decisions lately. There's always a chance, but it won't enter my mind until I'm at 19 with a start left." The victory also improved him to 18-4 lifetime against Baltimore, moving him past Don Larsen for the best winning percentage (.818) by a Yankee versus the Orioles. "I don't know what it is, but I pitch well against everybody in our division," said Pettitte. "This year against [the Orioles] I have pitched two good games and two mediocre games. But I've been able to win all of them." Pettitte, who became the first pitcher since Hall of Famer Stan Covaleski (1916-26) to post at least a dozen victories in each of his first nine years, endured a stretch earlier in the season that saw him go 1-5 in seven starts from the beginning of May to mid-June. Since then, though, he has been lights out with his only setback coming in a hard-luck, complete-game 2-1 loss to the Seattle Mariners, who reached the Louisiana native for just five hits. A shot at a first Cy Young Award is not out of the question either as the AL is loaded with pitchers who are having good seasons, but none that really stand out. Chicago's Esteban Loaiza (16-6, 2.61) has been a nice story and will pitch against the Yankees on Tuesday. Toronto's Roy Halladay leads the AL in wins with 17, but has struggled of late. Oakland's Mark Mulder (15-9, 3.13) was having a great season, but a stress fracture in his hip could sideline him the rest of the year. Pedro Martinez (10-3, 2.29) is always brilliant, but does not have the wins thanks to Boston's bullpen problems earlier in the year. Besides Loaiza, Pettitte's stiffest competition could come from teammate Mike Mussina, who has been making somewhat of a late-season charge himself. The "Moose" (14-7, 3.18) has won four of his last five decisions, while sitting atop the AL in strikeouts with teammate Roger Clemens at 164. Pettitte's timing could not be any better as he is ready to test the free agent waters following the season. Always clutch in the postseason, he will likely command at least $15 million a year on the open market with the asking price getting higher and higher with each impressive performance. END OF THE ROAD FOR OROSCO It looks as if the ageless Jesse Orosco's tenure in pinstripes, and perhaps his career, could come to an end on Tuesday. With New York set to activate lefthander Gabe White from the 15-day disabled list and Monday's acquisition of fellow lefty Felix Heredia, Orosco will likely be released. In addition to that move, the Yanks will probably ship struggling righthander Jeff Weaver to Triple-A Columbus. Weaver, who has an option remaining, came out of the pen on Monday and allowed a home run to Larry Bigbie before exiting to a loud chorus of boos. WHO'S HOT Alfonso Soriano finished 4-for-5 on Monday and belted his team-record 10th leadoff homer of the season. Over his last eight games, he is 13-for-33 with three homers and eight RBI to raise his average to .282. Despite an 0-for-4 performance on Monday, catcher Jorge Posada has been hitting everything in sight. He is 24-for-his-last-57 with five homers. WHO'S NOT Hideki Matsui is just 3-for-23 over his last six games. Matsui, though, leads all major league rookies with 90 RBI, the highest single-season total by a Yankees' rookie since Tom Tresh had 93 in 1962. COMING UP The Yankees will start a three-game series with the AL Central-leading Chicago White Sox at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday before heading to Fenway Park for a Labor Day weekend set against the hated Boston Red Sox.

the leaders in the AL Central, the Chicago White Sox, to town for a three-game set at Yankee Stadium. New York comes into the contest holding a five-game lead over the Boston Red Sox after winning the final two games of their four-game set with the Baltimore Orioles, including a 5-2 victory in Monday's finale. Alfonso Soriano led off the bottom of the first inning with a homer and broke open a tight game with a two-run single in the eighth, as the Yankees won their ninth game in 11 tries.
