Rangers place Benoit on DL, call up Nippert MLB Baseball 07/05/2008
Baltimore, MD (MySportsbook) - The Texas Rangers placed pitcher Joaquin Benoit on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with right shoulder inflammation. The move is retroactive to July 3. Benoit has compiled a 3-2 record with a 5.60 earned run average in 34 relief appearances this season. The 30-year-old has spent his entire eight-year career with the Rangers, posting a 30-26 record with a 4.83 ERA and eight saves. To replace Benoit on the roster, Texas purchased the contract of pitcher Dustin Nippert from T
Rangers play second of three in Baltimore MLB Baseball 07/05/2008
(MySportsbook) - The Texas Rangers and the Baltimore Orioles continue a three-game weekend set at Camden Yards tonight. Yesterday, Freddie Bynum drove in three runs and the Orioles jumped on the Rangers early and came away with a 10-4 victory. Every Baltimore starter either had a hit or scored a run with Adam Jones and Brandon Fahey each recording two hits, two runs scored and two RBI in the Orioles' third win in four games. Jeremy Guthrie (5-7) took the win after allowing four runs on eight hits and two
Rangers head to Baltimore for three MLB Baseball 07/04/2008
(MySportsbook) - The Texas Rangers will pay a visit to the Baltimore Orioles this weekend, starting with the first of three straight games today from Camden Yards. Texas will try to get back on track after having its three-game winning streak halted after Wednesdays 18-7 blowout loss at Yankee Stadium. Milton Bradley and Chris Davis both had two-run homers for the Rangers, who got two more RBI from Josh Hamilton. Hamilton leads the majors with 82 RBI this season. Ian Kinsler was 1-for-4 and extended his h

arned the monthly honors, ending the streak of consecutive monthly honors at two for Hamilton, who led the majors in RBI with 80 entering play Wednesday. In his second season with the Red Sox, Drew tallied 21 extra-base hits in June, including seven doubles and two triples. He had a .462 on-base percentage and opened the month with an 11-game hitting streak from June 1-12. Others receiving votes were Texas Rangers second baseman Ian Kinsler, and Kansas City Royals outfielders David DeJesus and Jose Guillen.
Short-lived shortstop stint for Baltimore's Cintron MLB Baseball 07/02/2008
(MySportsbook) - By no means was/is Alex Cintron the answer for the Baltimore Orioles at shortstop this season, but he didn't even get his 15 minutes of fame. On June 22 Baltimore designated Freddie Bynum for assignment, all but leaving the job up to an aging Cintron until the O's could figure out how to make improvements at the position for the long haul. Cintron, who began 2008 in the minors and was filling in the blanks all over the field just to stay active, was starting to find his groove from an offensive standpoint with four hits in the last three games before the unthinkable happened. The 29-year old native of Puerto Rico then strained his left hamstring, sending him to the 15-day DL on July 1 and again turning the shortstop position into an ongoing, downward spiral that appears to have no end. When the O's designated Bynum for assignment they probably thought they had seen the last of the North Carolina native for the foreseeable future. However, he's back on the main stage once again and will try to give Baltimore enough of a reason to keep him on a little bit longer this time. Beginning to get up there in age himself, after celebrating his 28th birthday in March with right knee surgery that kept him off the big club until the second week of May, Bynum's most recent stay with the Orioles was anything but sweet as he posted a total of just six hits during a three-week span in June. Before being sent down Bynum tallied just one single in his final nine games. Bynum, who was brought back from Norfolk of the International League, has appeared in 34 games for the Orioles this season, starting 29, but he has posted a mere 19 hits in 99 at-bats (.192), with all but four of those hits being singles. Needless to say, playing shortstop in Baltimore is quite the irony these days, with stops at the position being rather brief. ROBERTS READY FOR ALL-STAR ROSTER? Although it is still too early to tell, it appears as if Brian Roberts has the best shot of any Orioles player to make the AL All-Star team this year. However, if each team in the league didn't have to have a representative on the 2008 squad, Roberts would more than likely be spending his brief break someplace other than Yankee Stadium just like the rest of his teammates. As of June 30 Roberts (457,999 votes) ranked fifth among AL second basemen in fan voting, garnering less than a third of the votes generated by Boston's Dustin Pedroia (1,669,216), who is comfortably in first place as the flavor of the month. A career .283 hitter, with all eight of his seasons being spent with Baltimore, the University of South Carolina product is batting .295 thus far and just recently logged the 1000th hit of his career. For someone who has just six home runs thus far in 2008, it is rather impressive to see Roberts with the second-highest slugging percentage (.488) among players at his position in the AL. More impressive than his numbers at the plate are his nearly mistake-free actions in the field where he has just three errors in 387 total chances and an outstanding .992 fielding percentage. WHO'S HOT The silver lining during the first half of the season for Baltimore continues to be Brian Roberts, who produced nine hits in his last seven starts, tallying four doubles, a triple, a home run and five runs scored along the way. Although he's started only three games in the last week, Jay Payton still has more RBI (seven) than anyone else on the club over seven games. Nick Markakis has scored seven runs and plated five in his last seven starts as well. WHO'S NOT Although it doesn't matter for the immediate future, Cintron batted just .182 over his last six games before heading to the DL. Melvin Mora has hit the skids over the last week, producing just two hits in 20 at-bats. Also bringing down the team's overall batting average is Kevin Millar, who has three hits in the same number of at-bats as Mora. ON DECK The Orioles are set to play the second of a three-game set against the Kansas City Royals tonight at home, pitting Daniel Cabrera (5-4) against Gil Meche (6-8). The clubs close out the series on Thursday night with O's hurler Garrett Olson (6-3) countering Kyle Davies (3-1) of KC. Baltimore then continues its homestand on Friday with a late afternoon tilt versus the Texas Rangers. That contest, the first of three, shows Jeremy Guthrie (4-7) facing off against Vicente Padilla (10-4). Following the weekend series with Texas, the Orioles hit the road for division rivals Toronto and Boston just prior to the 2008 All-Star Break.
Role reversal: Ex-Ranger Ponson tries to halt Yankees' slide MLB Baseball 07/02/2008
(MySportsbook) - Despite his success this year, the Texas Rangers felt that Sidney Ponson wasn't a good fit for their club. He gets a chance to show his former team what it lost tonight, when the right-hander tries to help the New York Yankees avoid a sweep at the hands of Texas in the finale of a three-game set in the Bronx. Ponson was 4-1 with a 3.88 earned run average in nine starts with the Rangers before being designated for assignment on June 6 by the club after a series of transgressions. Those inc
Rangers nip Yanks with run in ninth MLB Baseball 07/02/2008
Bronx, NY (MySportsbook) - Michael Young went 2-for-5 and drove in the go- ahead run in the ninth inning, as the Texas Rangers edged the New York Yankees, 3-2, in the middle contest of a three-game set at Yankee Stadium. Chris Davis was 1-for-3 with an RBI for the Rangers, who have won four of five overall. Jarrod Saltalamacchia had the other RBI in the win. Kevin Millwood lasted five innings and gave up a run on five hits, but did not factor in the decision. Frank Francisco (2-2) was dealt the win as he
Yankees' Chamberlain takes on Rangers in the Bronx MLB Baseball 07/01/2008
(MySportsbook) - Joba Chamberlain will attempt to win his first game as a starter at home tonight, when the New York Yankees resume a three-game series with the Texas Rangers in the Bronx. Chamberlain has been what the Yankees hoped he would be when they moved him into the starting rotation after he made a name for himself in the bullpen. The 22-year-old didn't factor into the decision of any of his first four starts, despite allowing five runs over 18 1/3 innings, before defeating Pittsburgh on Wednesday
Rangers use strong bullpen to edge Yankees MLB Baseball 06/30/2008
Bronx, NY (MySportsbook) - Josh Hamilton and Chris Davis each knocked in a run to push the Texas Rangers past the New York Yankees, 2-1, in the opener of a three-game set. Michael Young went 3-for-4, including two doubles, for the Rangers, who have triumphed in three of their last four. Scott Feldman (2-3) gave up a run on four hits in 5 2/3 innings. C.J. Wilson tossed a perfect ninth to pick up his 18th save of the year. Texas' bullpen retired the final 10 Yankee hitters, but reliever Eddie Guardado left
Yankees send Mussina to hill vs. Rangers MLB Baseball 06/30/2008
(MySportsbook) - Mike Mussina takes aim at win No. 11 this evening, when the New York Yankees start a three-game series with the Texas Rangers at Yankee Stadium. Mussina, who is 10-5 with a 3.93 earned run average on the year, had his last start cut short on Thursday in Pittsburgh due to rain. He had thrown 46 pitches before the game was postponed. The 39-year-old righty lost for the first time in five decisions in his previous start on June 20 to the Cincinnati Reds, as he allowed four runs and 10 hits i
