2004 SEASON SERIES: Seattle won, 3-0
SEATTLE (26-32)
In the opener the Mariners will go with Joel Pineiro, who hasn't factored into the decision in four consecutive starts. Last Saturday against Tampa Bay, he surrendered four runs on five hits in 6 1/3 innings of work, striking out seven and walking three. Pineiro faced the Montreal Expos twice in his career, going 1-1 with a stingy 1.76 ERA.
On Thursday, Aaron Sele pitched seven scoreless innings to lead Seattle to an 8-0 win over Florida in the finale of a three-game interleague series at Dolphins Stadium. Sele (5-5) was sensational on the mound as he yielded just five hits. The veteran righthander, who struck out one and walked one, was in complete control as he did not allow a baserunner to reach second base before turning it over to the bullpen. J.J. Putz worked a perfect eighth inning and Ron Villone pitched a 1-2-3 ninth.
Randy Winn hit a solo homer and had two RBI for the Mariners, who have won four of their last five games. Richie Sexson and Raul Ibanez also drove in a pair of runs in the win
Mariners outfielder Ichiro Suzuki went 1-for-5 Thursday and is on pace to be the first major leaguer in more than 70 years to collect 1,000 hits in less than 700 games. Entering play tonight, Ichiro has 997 career hits in 692 career games. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the last player to collect 1,000 hits in less than 700 games was Chuck Klein in 1933. Klein collected his 1,000th hit in career game 683.
WASHINGTON (34-26)
The first-place Washington Nationals try to stretch their winning streak to eight games in this series opener. Washington, which leads the tightly-wound NL East by 1 1/2 games over second- place Philadelphia, is coming off a three- game sweep of visiting Oakland. Tonight, the franchise will try for its first eight-game winning streak since June 12-21, 2002.
On Thursday, Livan Hernandez threw eight strong innings and Nick Johnson drove in three runs with a bases loaded double as the Nationals defeated Oakland, 4-3 in the series finale. The Nationals have won 10 of their last 11 games. Hernandez (9-2) allowed two runs on eight hits. The righthander, who struck out five and walked one, has won eight straight decisions for the first time since posting nine wins in a 12-game stretch from June 28 - September 6, 1997 while with Florida.
Tonight, the Nats will rely on Sun-Woo Kim, who takes the place of the departed Tomo Ohka. The latter was traded to Milwaukee on Friday in exchange for second baseman Junior Spivey. Kim has made a pair of relief appearances for the Nationals this season, going 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA. He has struck out four batters in 4 1/3 innings of work. Kim, who was recalled from Triple-A New Orleans on May 26, is 0-0 with a 6.75 ERA in two career relief outings against Seattle.
Since May 18, 16 of Washington's 30 games have been decided by one run. They are 11-5 in those contests.
The Nationals' bullpen has accounted for 14 victories this season.
