PHILADELPHIA (36-28)
After a sizzling homestand, the Phillies try to carry their momentum to the road in this series. Philadelphia went 12-1 during its recent set of games at Citizens Bank Park, and now finds itself within a game of the first-place Washington Nationals in the NL East.
On Sunday, Cory Lidle threw seven innings of one-run ball and Chase Utley hit a three-run homer as the Phillies capped their homestand with a 6-2 victory over Milwaukee. Lidle (6-4) allowed just four hits and struck out three with one walk. Pat Burrell also homered for Philadelphia, which has won 15-of-17. Ugueth Urbina struck out two in a 1-2-3 eighth and Billy Wagner worked the ninth to finish the game. Burrell has an 11-game hitting streak. Bobby Abreu and Jim Thome each drove in a run for Philadelphia.
Thome, who has battled back problems this season, is 5-for-14 (.357) with two homers and five RBI in his last four games.
In the series opener, the Phillies will hand the ball to Jon Lieber, who has won three consecutive starts. Last Tuesday against Texas the veteran allowed four runs on six hits in 6 2/3 innings, but the Phils won, 8-5. Lieber, who has allowed a whopping 18 home runs this season, has been the benefactor of solid run support during his win streak. The Phillies have scored a combined 26 runs in his last three outings. Lifetime against Seattle, Lieber is 2-1 with a 3.91 ERA in three starts.
Overall, the Phils are 20-6 since May 15 -- the best record in the majors since that point.
SEATTLE (26-35)
In the opener the Mariners will go with Gil Meche, who has lost two of his last three starts. Last Wednesday in Florida he yielded four runs on six hits in five innings of a 5-4 loss. Meche walked five and struck out three. Meche faced Philadelphia on June 4, 2003 and anchored a 7-2 Mariners win at Veterans Stadium. He allowed two runs on five hits in six innings.
On Sunday the Mariners were defeated, 3-2, by Washington, which completed a three-game sweep. Greg Dobbs and Raul Ibanez both provided RBI doubles for the Mariners, losers of three straight and four of their last five games.
Ichiro Suzuki went 0-for-5 and remains one hit shy of history. Ichiro has 999 hits for his career, in 695 games. With his next hit he would become the first major leaguer in more than 70 years to collect 1,000 hits in less than 700 games. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the last player to collect 1,000 hits in fewer than 700 games was Chuck Klein in 1933. Klein collected his 1,000th hit in career game 683.
The Phillies and Mariners met in June 2003 at the Vet, and Seattle posted a three-game sweep.
