Philadelphia, PA (My Sportsbook) - Allen Iverson scored 32 points and tied a career-high with nine steals to lead the
Philadelphia 76ers to a 107-104 overtime victory against the
Los Angeles Lakers at the First Union Center.
Keith Van Horn added 20 points and 11 rebounds, while Derrick Coleman finished with 18 points off the bench for the Sixers, who have won three straight after a five-game losing streak. Aaron McKie collected 14 points and Eric Snow chipped in with eight points and 12 assists in the victory.
Kenny Thomas made his Philadelphia debut and finished with 11 points after being acquired by the Sixers in a three-team trade on Wednesday.
Kobe Bryant scored 44 points and dished out 10 assists to lead the Lakers, who lost their second straight game in consecutive nights against their most recent NBA Finals opponents. The New Jersey Nets cruised to a 98-71 victory over the Lakers on Thursday.
Shaquille O'Neal finished with 26 points and 14 rebounds in the loss, Los Angeles' third straight and fifth in six games. Derek Fisher chipped in with 13 points and Robert Horry added 12 rebounds and four points in the loss.
After blowing a 10-point fourth-quarter lead, the Sixers took the early edge in overtime on a jumper by Iverson, who had not scored a field goal since the third frame. Within ten seconds, both Van Horn and O'Neal fouled out of the game.
After Iverson put the Sixers ahead by one point with a free throw, Philadelphia forced a turnover, and Snow scored on a layup off an assist from Iverson to extend the advantage to 102-99 with 1:21 remaining.
Fisher then missed a runner in the lane and Coleman snatched the rebound and was fouled. After hitting both free throws, the Sixers led 104-99 with 28 seconds to play.
Bryant nailed a three-pointer from the left wing to draw the Lakers within two, but with the shot clock unplugged, Bryant was forced to foul Iverson, who was able to hit 1-of-2 free throws to make the score 105-102 with 15 seconds on the clock.
Bryant drove on Iverson and dunked from the baseline to cut the deficit to one. The Lakers then quickly fouled Iverson, who missed both free throws to give Los Angeles the chance to win with 5.6 seconds remaining.
Horry took the in-bounds pass and found Rick Fox wide open off a screen, but Fox could not hold on to the pass and the ball went out of bounds. Coleman sank a pair of free throws to push the lead to three points, and Iverson intercepted the in-bounds heave for his ninth steal of the game to seal the victory.
The Sixers used a 23-8 run in the third quarter to overcome a five-point halftime deficit. Thomas scored the last six points in the spurt to give the Sixers a 69-62 lead. In all, Philadelphia scored 37 points in the third quarter, and limited Los Angeles to 25 points to hold an 80-73 edge into the final frame.
The Sixers led by as many as 10 points in the fourth quarter, but Bryant rallied the Lakers back into the game. Bryant scored six straight points in an 8-0 Lakers' run, and Fox's jumper made the score 85-83 with less than seven minutes remaining. Brian Shaw scored on a layup to give Los Angeles its first lead since midway through the third quarter at 90-89 with 4:16 on the clock.
O'Neal collected his fifth personal foul as he went over the back on Coleman with 2:10 to play. Coleman hit one of his two free throws to give the Sixers a 94-92 edge.
Bryant then found Fox open underneath the basket to tie the game at 94-94, and Iverson missed a fading layup on the other end of the floor. O'Neal was then fouled by Coleman, but O'Neal missed both free throws. Iverson missed a short jumper, and Bryant could not connect on a three-pointer as time expired in regulation.
Philadelphia never led in the opening frame, and trailed 23-20 going into the second quarter.
With both Iverson and O'Neal taking a breather on the bench, Coleman and McKie scored four points apiece in an 8-0 run to give the Sixers their first lead at 32-29. Thomas scored his first points as a Sixer on an up-and-under move to beat Fox and O'Neal to the basket, restoring Philadelphia's three-point edge at 34-31. However, the Lakers used a 7-0 spurt to regain the lead at 38-34. LA built its advantage to eight at 46-38 and led 48-43 at the break.
Bryant and O'Neal led all first-half scorers with 16 and 14 points, respectively, while Van Horn paced the Sixers with 12 points.
Iverson had five of his steals in the first quarter. He now has 1,012 steals in his career, and moved past Charles Barkley for third on the Sixers' all- time list.
The game attracted 21,127 fans, the second largest crowd for a Sixers game in the history of the First Union Center.
