Pittsburgh, PA (My Sportsbook) - The Pittsburgh Penguins will try to avoid matching their longest losing streak in team history tonight when they welcome the
Calgary Flames to the Igloo.
Pittsburgh suffered its 10th straight loss, a 3-1 setback to the New Jersey Devils on Thursday in the opener of a three-game homestand at Mellon Arena.
Milan Kraft scored the lone goal for the Penguins, who haven't won since November 29 at Buffalo.
Pittsburgh, with a loss tonight, would match the franchise-record for consecutive losses that was established from January 22 - February 10, 1983. The longest losing streak in NHL history is 17, achieved by the 1974-75 Washington Capitals and the 1992-93 San Jose Sharks.
The Penguins, who were tied for first in the Atlantic Division when their streak began, are now tied for last in the standings with the New York Islanders with 29 points. They are also 11 off the pace of the first-place Philadelphia Flyers.
The most recent team to make the playoffs despite a losing streak of 10 or more was the 1985-86 Calgary Flames, who went on to reach the Stanley Cup more was the 1985-86 Calgary Flames, who went on to reach the Stanley Cup final that season before falling to the Montreal Canadiens.
However, there is an asterisk to be applied to the Penguins' current skid. Because of an overtime loss last Saturday in Los Angeles, their record in the past 10 games is 0-9-0-1, as the NHL has been awarding a point with a special category for overtime losses since the 1998-99 season. Thus, the league doesn't consider the Penguins' current losing streak to be longer than three for the purposes of official statistics.
Pittsburgh, 7-6-1-1 on home ice, will wrap up its set against the Sabres on Monday.
Meanwhile, Calgary comes into Saturday's affair on the heels of a 3-0 shutout at the hands of the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday.
Roman Turek made 24 saves for Calgary, which had its road unbeaten streak halted at four games (3-0-1). The Flames are 7-8-1-2 on enemy ice this season.
Calgary also welcomed forward Jarome Iginla back to the lineup after last year's Art Ross Trophy winner missed the previous five games with a hip flexor.
The Flames finished 0-for-4 on the power play, but allowed Columbus to score once in four chances with the extra skater. On the year, the Flames are 2-13-2-2 when allowing a power-play goal.
The Flames will now be without right wing Scott Nichol, who yesterday was suspended five games by the NHL for butt-ending Blue Jackets winger Hannes Hyvonen from behind Thursday in Columbus.
The Penguins are 9-0-2 versus the Flames in Pittsburgh since Calgary won here February 12, 1989.
