Washington, DC (My Sportsbook) - The first-place
Tampa Bay Lightning try to snap a three- game winless skid tonight when they visit the Washington Capitals at the MCI Center.
Tampa, which leads the Southeast Division with 38 points, is 0-1-2 during the lull, including Saturday's 2-2 home tie versus Nashville. Vincent Lecavalier and Dan Boyle scored for the Bolts, but the Preds' Denis Pederson forced the stalemate early in the second period.
Vaclav Prospal contributed two assists for the Lightning, and Nikolai Khabibulin stopped 24 of 26 shots. Brad Richards added an assist for Tampa Bay, extending his point streak to 10 games, a personal best. It is the second longest streak in franchise history and fourth-longest in the NHL this season.
Washington, meanwhile, is tied for third in the Southeast with 33 points, and hopes to win its third straight game on the heels of a 1-3-1 lull. Michael Nylander scored a pair of goals in the third period to lead the Capitals to a 3-1 victory over the New York Islanders at Nassau Coliseum on Saturday.
Kip Miller added an assist and an empty-net goal for the Capitals, who improved to 21-1-3 in their last 25 meetings with the Islanders. Olaf Kolzig, who played in his third game back from a pulled thigh muscle, made 17 saves.
Nylander has been a prime contributor for the Capitals since being acquired from Chicago in late October. The Swede has recorded 10 goals and 20 assists in 23 games, after managing a mere four helpers in nine tilts with the Blackhawks.
Washington and Tampa Bay have split two games this season, but the Caps are 9-1-1 in the last 11 meetings overall. The Capitals are 3-1-1 in their last five trips to Tampa.
