(My Sportsbook) - The
San Antonio Spurs have been struggling as of late, but it could be a lot worse if it wasn't for the humble Tim Duncan.
The Spurs went just 1-3 on their recent four-game East Coast road trip, with all three losses coming against teams with sub-.500 records. However, San Antonio lost the three games by a combined five points.
The Spurs returned the friendly confines of the SBC Center on Friday and came away with a 98-95 victory over the Golden State Warriors.
Duncan, the reigning league MVP and early-season candidate for this year's award, poured in a season-high 37 points on an astonishing 14-of-18 shooting from the floor. It was the third straight game that he scored at least 30 from the floor. It was the third straight game that he scored at least 30 points.
"It's amazing how consistent he is," Warriors forward Antawn Jamison said. "He was just typical Tim Duncan."
Duncan also grabbed nine rebounds, dished out four assists, blocked three shots and made all nine of his free throw attempts. The only downside for Duncan was that his streak of consecutive double-doubles was halted at 14.
"Tim is playing MVP basketball," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. "Unfortunately, we're having a hard time finding people to join him. We need more consistent performance from people."
Over the last six games, Duncan is averaging 31.2 points and 15.3 rebounds, but the team is just 3-3 during the stretch.
The only other Spur to score in double figures Friday was Tony Parker, who collected 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting.
"I just think he's really wanted to pick it up and help the team win," Parker said of Duncan. "As teammates we have to do the same. He's our leader and we have to follow him."
Parker has been the only Spur to provide Duncan with consistent support all season. The second-year point guard is second on the team in scoring with an average of 13.8 points per game. He is also leading the team with 5.2 assists per contest - a figure that would probably be larger if he wasn't counted on to score so much.
San Antonio's stay at home was a brief one. The Spurs head out for a three- game road trip starting Sunday in Los Angeles with a matchup against the Clippers.
