Atlanta, GA (My Sportsbook) - The
Philadelphia Flyers try to head home on a three-game winning streak today when they visit the
Atlanta Thrashers at Philips Arena.
After opening a seven-game road set with a 1-2-1 mark, the Flyers have toppled both Los Angeles and Anaheim, including Friday's 1-0 triumph over the Ducks. Robert Esche posted his second shutout of the season and Keith Primeau scored the game's only goal, as the Flyers held on at the Pond.
Esche made 28 saves to post his fifth career blanking and help the Flyers improve to 7-3-2 in their last 12 games. Philadelphia, utilizing the services of regular starter Roman Cechmanek as well, has allowed just 19 goals in that stretch.
With the win the Flyers have 47 points, which ties them with the Devils atop the Atlantic Division. Philly and Jersey are five ahead of the third-place Pittsburgh Penguins.
Philadelphia, 6-2-1 in its last nine road games, will head home to face Buffalo on Tuesday to kick off a stretch that has it playing five-of-six at the First Union Center.
Atlanta, meanwhile, has lost 12 of its last 15 tilts and hopes to snap a two- game losing streak. On Friday the Thrashers dropped a 4-1 decision to visiting Pittsburgh, just a night after getting pounded by Ottawa, 8-1. Marc Savard scored the lone goal against the Penguins, while Pasi Nurminen allowed three goals on 27 shots.
The Thrashers, 2-3 under general manager and interim coach Don Waddell, have once again dropped into the NHL basement, with 25 points. They are two behind Buffalo in the race to avoid last place.
Atlanta is not expected to have the services of goaltender Byron Dafoe, who is still nursing a groin injury. The former Boston Bruin was shelled in Thursday's loss to Ottawa after having missed the previous four games due to the nagging ailment. Nurminen, who has stopped 93-of-99 shots in his last three games, is expected to start again today.
The Thrashers, who have dropped four consecutive home games, will host Carolina on Tuesday to conclude a three-game Philips Arena set.
Philadelphia defeated Atlanta, 3-1, at Philips on December 18 and is 9-0-2 in the last 11 meetings. The Flyers are 5-0-1 in their last six trips to Georgia.
