Detroit, MI (My Sportsbook) - Former Detroit Tigers shortstop Alan Trammell was named the new manager of the club on Wednesday. He reportedly agreed to a three-year contract. Trammell, who will attempt to break the Tigers' streak of nine consecutive losing seasons, had been the first base coach of the San Diego Padres the past three years. "To get back to the tradition of the English D. That's probably the number one reason why I am back," said Trammell, the fifth Tigers' manager in seven years. "It hurt me being away from here and hearing and looking from afar to see that this club has not done as well as I would have liked to have seen." Trammell, who spent his entire 20-year major league career with the Tigers (1977-96), takes over a team that finished 55-106 this year, marking the Tigers' worst season since they posted a 53-109 mark in 1996. Detroit's record this year tied Tampa Bay for worst in the majors and the Tigers fired manager Luis Pujols the day after the regular season ended. Pujols replaced Phil Garner in April after the Tigers started the season 0-6. Pujols lost his first five games at the helm, but ended Detroit's 0-11 start on April 16 against Tampa Bay. Pujols was the team's fourth manager since Sparky Anderson's 17-season tenure ended in 1995. The 44-year-old Trammell hit .285 with 185 homers and 1,003 RBI and played in 2,293 games during his major league playing career.
