(My Sportsbook) - Should things continue as they've gone for the past month, the
Boston Bruins will need another late-season spurt if they have any hope of landing a top-three seed in the Eastern Conference.
Boston, 2-10-1 in its last 13 games, has plunged off its perch atop the East and now stands in a second-place tie in the Northeast Division -- nine behind the roaring Ottawa Senators.
The club the B's are tied with is Toronto, which toppled Boston 5-2 on Tuesday night at Air Canada Centre. Alexander Mogilny broke a 2-2 tie at 13:54 of the third period to lift the Maple Leafs to the win, as they erupted for three unanswered goals.
Tie Domi and Travis Green each had a goal and an assist for Toronto, which is 11-0-1 in its last 12 games at home. Alyn McCauley and Jonas Hoglund also scored and Ed Belfour made 40 saves in the win. Belfour had 50 saves in a 2-1 win over New Jersey on Saturday.
Boston received goals from Brian Rolston and Glen Murray, but lost its fourth straight contest. John Grahame made 30 saves in a losing effort.
"I actually felt great the first two periods and I felt good at the beginning of the third," Grahame told the Boston Globe. "It's frustrating because it's the last four or five minutes, and that's the time you really have to buckle down and play well."
Grahame has struggled since emerging as a pleasant surprise at the season's outset. He has lost his last three starts -- including an eight-goal shellacking at the hands of the Islanders last Friday -- and surrendered three scores or more in six of his last nine outings.
With the score tied at 2-2 in the third period, the Maple Leafs netted three unanswered goals in 2:24 for a 5-2 advantage.
After a scoreless first period, the Bruins grabbed a 1-0 lead on Rolston's goal at the 12:15 mark of the second. P.J. Axelsson was behind the net and fed a skating Rolston, who chipped the puck into the net short side.
Domi recorded his ninth goal of the season 2:38 later to tie the game. Robert Reichel wristed a shot on net from the goal line and Domi was in front to deflect the puck past Grahame.
With 29 seconds left in the second period, McCauley notched his first goal in 28 games for a 2-1 Toronto lead. He took a pass from Mogilny and backhanded the puck over Grahame's right shoulder.
Boston tied the game on Murray's 22nd goal 3:31 into the third. Murray wristed a laser from the slot, beating Belfour high to the stick side.
