2005 SEASON SERIES: New York leads, 3-0.
NEW YORK (57-54)
Pedro Martinez will pitch for the Mets in the opener on Tuesday. He has not lost since July 5th, when he was defeated by the Nationals, 3-2. In his last contest, a 6-4 loss to Milwaukee, the righthander allowed three runs on eight hits, while striking out eight batters in seven innings of work. However, he did not factor in the decision.
In 10 starts away from Shea this season, Martinez is 6-2 with an impressive 2.71 ERA. Martinez has dominated the Padres in his career, posting an 8-2 ledger with a 2.87 ERA in 13 starts.
Kris Benson has a 1-2 record in his last eight starts and the Mets have split the eight games. He faced the Padres on July 19 and was not involved in the decision, despite yielding just one run on five hits in seven innings.
On Sunday, Victor Zambrano threw eight solid innings and David Wright had three RBI to lead New York to a 6-1 victory over Chicago, as the Mets swept a three-game series from the Cubs at Shea Stadium.
Zambrano (6-9) allowed just one run, while scattering five hits with a pair of walks and a strikeout to win for just the second time in his last seven starts.
Cliff Floyd finished the game 3-for-3 with his 26th homer of the season, and had two RBI and scored twice. Carlos Beltran scored three times for the Mets, who banged out 10 hits to win for the fifth time in seven games.
Jose Reyes went 1-for-4 and extended his career-high hitting streak to 20 games.
The Mets swept a three-game series from the Padres at home earlier this season.
SAN DIEGO (56-55)
Taking the hill for the Padres on Tuesday will be Chan Ho Park, who will be making his second start since being acquired from Texas.
In his other outing, a 9-8 setback to Pittsburgh, the righthander allowed seven runs -- five earned -- on eight hits and three walks. But despite the poor outing, Park did not factor in the decision. In eight career outings against the Mets, Park is an even 3-3 with an impressive 2.48 ERA.
Brian Lawrence won his last start against the Pirates, allowing three runs -- two earned -- on eight hits in 6 1/3 innings. It marked his first victory since June 28.
On Sunday, Jake Peavy tossed a five-hit shutout to lead San Diego to a 3-0 victory over the Washington Nationals at RFK Stadium.
Peavy (10-4), who showed devastating command and scattered a mere five singles while striking out 10, also drove in a run. Eric Young and Xavier Nady added solo homers for San Diego, which swept the three-game series and has won four in a row to creep above .500 with a 56-55 mark.
San Diego is the only team with a winning record in the National League West and leads the division by three games over Arizona.
