Kirkland, WA (My Sportsbook) - Seattle Mariners shortstop Carlos Guillen pleaded guilty to negligent driving charges as part of a plea bargain with prosecutors. In turn, charges of drunken driving were dropped. The 27-year-old could face a maximum of 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine when he is sentenced on March 5, although he is likely not to see any jail time. Guillen was stopped by police on June 13 after being clocked at 89 mph in a 60-mph zone. A police officer stated that he smelled alcohol and saw Guillen's eyes were "bloodshot and watery." A portable breath test was administered, revealing Guillen's blood alcohol level was .093 -- higher than the state's legal limit of .08. Guillen, who said he was returning home from a night out after drinking about two glasses of wine and two beers with his girlfriend and other friends, refused to take a breathalyzer test after he was taken to the police station. Guillen's lawyer, Douglas Cowan, argued that the citizen of Venezuela could not understand the officers' commands or his rights. Guillen finished the 2002 season with a .261 average, nine homers and 56 RBI. In five major-league seasons -- all with Seattle -- Guillen has a .260 average with 22 homers and 159 RBI.
