Atlanta, GA (My Sportsbook) - Milton Bradley homered and had three RBI to power the
Los Angeles Dodgers past the
Atlanta Braves, 7-4, in the rubber match of a three-game set at Turner Field.
Jeff Weaver earned the win for the Dodgers, who have won three of their last four and five of their last seven.
Weaver (11-8) allowed four runs - three earned - on 10 hits over six innings, while striking out six without a walk to win his fourth straight decision. The Dodgers are in third place in the NL West, four games behind division- leading San Diego.
"It was big to take two of three because we are chasing," Bradley said. "We have to catch San Diego and we have every intention of doing that. This is just a step in the right direction."
Andruw Jones and Adam LaRoche homered for Atlanta, which dropped two of three in this series, but is still 4 1/2 games in front of the Philadelphia Phillies for the lead in the National League East. The Phillies split a day-night doubleheader with the Washington Nationals on Thursday.
The Dodgers wasted little time jumping out in front on Braves starter John Thomson, reaching the righthander for a pair of runs in the first inning. Bradley drew a two-out walk and after Jeff Kent singled, Olmedo Saenz plated both runners with a double to center.
Atlanta got one of the runs back in the second, as Brian McCann singled home LaRoche, who had opened the inning with a base hit.
Los Angeles, though, blew the game wide open with five runs in the fourth. Jayson Werth got things going with a leadoff walk, went to second on Jose Cruz Jr.'s base hit and scored on Dioner Navarro's single back up the middle. Weaver then reached on a bunt single and following a Cesar Izturis pop out, Oscar Robles lofted a sacrifice fly to center to score Cruz. Bradley then put the game out of reach with his 13th home run of the season, a three-run shot to right to make it 7-1.
"It's tough when they score big like that and we only had one run," Jones said. "Weaver was pitching good today. When he made a couple of mistakes we took advantage of it. It was a tough loss, but we have to look forward to the next series and try to win again."
The Braves crept within three in the sixth with three runs on the strength of back-to-back home runs. Chipper Jones reached on an error and scored on Andruw Jones' Major League-leading 39th home run of the season. LaRoche then made it 7-4 two pitches later with his 15th homer of the year.
It was the seventh time this season that the Braves have gone back-to-back.
Thomson (3-3) was tagged with the loss, as he surrendered seven runs and eight hits in 3 2/3 innings.
