Philadelphia, PA (My Sportsbook) - Michal Handzus collected a goal and an assist and Roman Cechmanek made 21 saves to lead the
Philadelphia Flyers to a 3-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings in an elite matchup at the First Union Center.
Radovan Somik and Jeremy Roenick also notched goals for Philadelphia, which improved to 6-0 in 2003 to match its season high for consecutive victories. The Flyers also remained undefeated at 15-0-1 when scoring at least three goals and 16-0-2 when leading after two periods.
Henrik Zetterberg and Brett Hull notched the goals for Detroit, while Curtis Joseph made 26 saves in net. The Red Wings have dropped four straight contests in Philadelphia, and lost for just the third time in their last 14 games overall (8-3-3).
Zetterberg opened the scoring at the 7:31 mark of the first period with his eighth goal of the season. Mathieu Dandenault fed a pass to a cutting Zetterberg, who skated to his left to avoid Eric Desjardins, and continued to drift to the left to draw Cechmanek out of position. Despite the sharpest of angles, Zetterberg threaded the needle with a shot to the high corner of the far side of the net to give the Red Wings a 1-0 lead.
However, the Flyers answered just 15 seconds later, as Somik knocked in a rebound for his second goal of the season. Handzus fed the puck to Donald Brashear, who took a hard slapshot from the left circle. Joseph made the initial save, but could not control the rebound, and Somik crashed the net to knock the puck out of the air and past the goaltender to tie the score at 1-1.
Detroit dominated possession through the tail end of the opening stanza, but Cechmanek made several point-blank saves, and Roenick took advantage of a Detroit turnover to give the Flyers a 2-1 lead with 1:52 left in the frame.
Boyd Devereaux fell down after skating out of the Red Wings' defensive zone, and Roenick collected the loose puck in the neutral zone with a head of steam. After faking a shot to get around Chris Chelios, Roenick switched the puck from his backhand to forehand to lift a shot over Joseph for his 15th goal of the season.
Zetterberg had a chance to tie the game with about one minute remaining in the period, but was pressured by Eric Weinrich and lifted a breakaway shot over the net. Handzus later missed an opportunity to extend the Flyers' advantage with 13 seconds on the clock when he had two chances to knock a rebound into a vacated net, but the puck slid along the goal line and stayed out to keep the score at 2-1 at the first intermission.
However, Handzus forced a turnover early in the second period to collect his 11th goal of the season. Dmitri Bykov collected the puck in front of the crease and tried to clear the zone, but he was pressured by Handzus and turned the puck over to Weinrich at the point. Weinrich drifted to his right before firing a low shot, and Handzus deflected the puck past Joseph to give the Flyers a 3-1 cushion just 41 seconds into the stanza.
After being shut out in the second period by Cechmanek, Hull got the Red Wings back within one goal early in the third stanza with his 18th goal of the season. Bykov got the puck down low to Pavel Datsyuk, who fell to the ice but still managed to find an open Hull in the right circle. Hull snapped a wristshot through traffic and beat Cechmanek at the far side of the net to make the score 3-2 with 18:58 left to play.
The Red Wings had a pair of power plays in the third period, but failed to capitalize with the man advantage, as Cechmanek turned aside the only two shots he faced shorthanded.
Detroit then pulled Joseph in exchange for the extra skater with 1:12 to play, but Cechmanek stood on his head in net to secure the victory for Philadelphia.
Flyers head coach Ken Hitchcock recorded his 300th career victory, becoming the 29th coach to reach the plateau in NHL history.
