Flushing, NY (My Sportsbook) - The New York Mets have signed outfielder Tsuyoshi Shinjo to a one-year contract. The base salary is worth $600,000, but he can earn an additional $400,000 in bonuses based on plate appearances. Shinjo began his major league career with the Mets in 2001, then was traded to San Francisco last winter in a deal that brought Shawn Estes to New York. "We welcome back Tsuyoshi Shinjo," said Mets senior assistant general manager Jim Duquette. "He was a productive player two years ago both offensively and defensively for us. In addition to his defense in the outfield, he picked up a lot of game-winning hits for us. He's another solid addition to our outfield mix." Shinjo hit just .238 with nine homers and 37 RBI for the National League champions. He saw his playing time cut considerably in August when the Giants acquired centerfielder Kenny Lofton at the trade deadline. The Giants released him in November when he asked management for a chance to play every day. Shinjo hit .268 with 10 homers and 56 RBI for the Mets in 2001.
