Baseball: (Sept. 5) A home run by Rob Johnson (Houston, Texas) capped off a three-run rally in the top of the eighth inning as the 2005 USA World Cup Team held on for a 6-4 win over Australia at the 2005 IBAF World Cup. (Sept. 5) Brett Anderson (Stillwater, Okla.) threw a one-hitter through seven innings and the U.S. offense registered 10 hits as the USA Baseball Junior National Pan Am Team defeated Canada, 5-1, in the COPABE "AAA" Pan American Junior Championships. Basketball: (Aug. 31) The USA Men's World Championship Qualifying Team fell to Argentina, 84-67, in second-round play of the FIBA Americas Men's World Championship Qualifying Tournament. (Sept. 1) The USA Men's World Championship Qualifying Team rallied in the game's final five minutes to steal a 91-77 victory from Uruguay in FIBA Americas Men's World Championship Qualifying Tournament action. (Sept. 2) The USA Men's World Championship Qualifying Team came up short against Puerto Rico, 88-83, in a game that did not affect the USA's hunt for the Tournament of the Americas title. Jerome Beasley (Moreno Valley, Calif.) led the U.S. with 18 points. (Sept. 2) The USA Men's World Championship Qualifying Team fell to Brazil, 93-75, in the semifinals of the FIBA Americas Men's World Championship Qualifying Tournament. (Sept. 4) Despite 30 points and 14 rebounds from Kris Lang (Gastonia, N.C.), the USA Men's World Championship Qualifying Team was unable to overcome Venezuela's clutch shooting and fell 93-83 in the bronze-medal game of the FIBA Americas Men's World Championship Qualifying Tournament. Bobsled: (Sept. 1) The United States Bobsled and Skeleton Federation and Rival Films announced the debut of four new short films featuring Team Hays: the four-man team of 2002 silver medalists Todd Hays (Del Rio, Texas) and Bill Schuffenhauer (Salt Lake City, Utah), 2002 Olympian Steve Mesler (Buffalo, N.Y.) and 2006 Olympic hopeful Pavle Jovanovic (Tom's River, N.J.). (Sept. 1) The USBSF announced its schedule for the upcoming 2005-2006 season. It will encompass the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Torino, Italy and the USBSF has set a goal to win five Olympic medals at the two-week event. For more information, log on to www.usbsf.com.

Bowling: (Sept. 1) Cory Simmons (Wichita, Kan.) and Amanda Burgoyne (Newport, Minn.) took the mixed doubles crown in the adult division at the Lee Evans Tournament of the Americas with a six-game total of 2,768. Team USA's Stefanie Nation (Miami, Fla.) and Dan Patterson (Phoenix, Ariz.) finished seventh with 2,330. In the junior division, Ronnie Sparks Jr. (Wayne, Mich.) and Kayla Bandy (Danville, Va.) won the mixed doubles title with a score of 2,564, while Mark French (Ventura, Calif.) and Josie Earnest (Vandalia, Ill.) finished ninth with 2,289. (Sept. 2) Cory Simmons, Dan Patterson, Stefanie Nation and Amanda Burgoyne bowled a 29,907 to place first in the adult national all- events competition as Team USA won its 19th consecutive all-events crown at the Lee Evans Tournament of the Americas. USA's bid for an 11th straight team title fell short as it placed second behind Mexico with 9,833. Simmons earned the men's individual all-events crown with a score of 7,936 and Patterson finished fourth with 7,596. In the women's all-events competition, Nation placed third with 7,234. On the junior side, Ronnie Sparks Jr. erased a 192- pin deficit to win the boys' individual all-events title and also led Junior Team USA to gold medals in both the mixed team (9,858) and national all-events (29,077) competitions. Kayla Bandy won the all-events title for the junior girls' with 7,213. John Weltzien (Wellington, Fla.), Bob Hart (Suwanee, Ga.), Sharon Colon (Miami, Fla.) and Betty Maull (Viera, Fla.) shot a score of 8,732 to take bronze in the seniors' team event. The United States won a total of 26 medals at this year's tournament. (Sept. 6) The United States Bowling Congress has selected Pettus Advertising Inc. to pursue local sponsorship contracts in advance of the USBC Open Championships Feb.11-July 1 in Corpus Christi, Texas. Boxing: (Sept. 3) Eleven national champions were crowned at the 2005 Fran Jones Under 19 National Championships and will compete in the Tammer Tournament in Finland in October. Vincent Montoya (Cheyenne, Wyo.) won the light flyweight (106 lbs.) division, David Gaspar (Wilmington, Calif.) repeated as flyweight (112 lbs.) champion and Luis Del Valle (Newburgh, N.Y.) earned his second national featherweight title. In a closely contested lightweight (132 lbs.) championship bout, Danny Garcia (Philadelphia, Pa.) pulled out a 22-15 final decision. The light welterweight (141 lbs.) division was won by Willie Nelson (Cleveland, Ohio) and Enver Halili (Weatherford, Texas) claimed a 19-15 victory in the welterweight (152 lbs.) championship. Mike Montoya Jr. (Colorado Springs, Colo.) won a 5-4 championship decision in the middleweight (165 lbs.) division and with his victory in the light heavyweight (178 lbs.) division, Alan Lawrence (Newark, N.J.) earned outstanding boxer of the tournament honors. In the bantamweight (119 lbs.) division, Shemuel Pagan (Brooklyn, N.Y.) took a 14-12 victory and the national championship. Oleskandr Mamoshuk (Brooklyn, N.Y.) earned a 17-5 win in the heavyweight (201 lbs.) division, while Francisco Moncivais (Laurel, Miss.) claimed the super heavyweight (201+ lbs.) title. Equestrian: (Aug. 31) Two-time Olympic silver medalist Anne Kursinski (Frenchtown, N.J.) topped a field of 51 competitors to win the Wall Street Journal speed class at the 30th annual Hampton Classic Horse Show. (Sept. 1) Hampton Classic Horse Show's Tony Hitchcock and Jean Lindgren, both retiring as executive directors, were honored for their three decades of leadership and dedication at a special benefit that raised more than $60,000 for the Equestrian AIDS Foundation and The Ride for Hope. (Sept. 1) Laurie Jakubauskas (Kennett Square, Pa.) topped a 40-horse field to win the CBS2 Jumper Class at the Hampton Classic Horse Show. (Sept. 2) More than 5,000 people nationwide have offered assistance to horses and owners affected by the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. To assist or donate money, a volunteer list of caregivers and farms can be found on the U.S Equestrian Federation's Web site. (Sept. 2) In a time of 67.598, Brianne Goutal (New York, N.Y.) captured the $10,000 Junior/Amateur Owner Welcome Stake at the Hampton Classic Horse Show. (Sept. 2) Joe Fargis (Southampton, N.Y.) won the $30,000 Sotheby's International Realty World Cup Qualifier at the Hampton Classic Horse Show with a 45.18 double clear performance. (Sept. 3) In a time of 40.173, Danielle Torano (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) jumped clean to place first in the $15,000 WGHR Farm Junior/Amateur Owner Classic at the Hampton Classic Horse Show. (Sept. 4) Nikko Ritter (Geneva, Fla.) won the $25,000 Calvin Klein Show Jumping Derby at the Hampton Classic Horse Show with a clear jump-off round in 42.283, while Brianne Goutal finished third. (Sept. 3) Aaron Vale (Aiken, S.C.) clocked a time of 39.79 to win the $25,000 Fendi Cup at the Hampton Classic Horse Show. (Sept. 4) Thousands of children and parents enjoyed the 12th annual Cablevision's Kids Day/Dia de los Ninos presented by Hickey Freeman at the Hampton Classic Horse Show. (Sept. 6) The 2005 USEF/Markel Young Horse Dressage National Championships, sponsored by Markel Insurance, will take place at MSEDA Dressage at the Park, Sept. 9-11 in Lexington, Ky. Fencing: (Sept. 1) U.S. Fencing announced the completion of the first phase in the re-launch of its Web site that now includes updated athlete biographies and new photographs. (Sept. 6) At the 2005 World Veterans Fencing Championships, the U.S. contingent won a record 14 medals with at least one American finishing in the top eight of every event. Field Hockey: (Aug. 31) April Fronzoni (Larksville, Pa.) scored the lone U.S. goal as the USA Field Hockey Women's National Team tied Canada, 1-1. (Sept. 1) Kelsey Keeran (Columbus, Ohio) and Angie Loy (Loysville, Pa.) scored goals to lead the USA Field Hockey Women's National Team to a 2-1 win over Canada. (Sept. 3) Kate Barber (Virginia Beach, Va.) scored on a penalty corner goal in the final minute of play to give the USA Women's National Team a 2-1 victory over Canada in game five of the six-game series. (Sept. 4) Kate Barber scored three goals and April Fronzoni added two as the USA Field Hockey Women's National Team beat Canada, 6-0, to complete the six-game series undefeated. Gymnastics: (Sept. 2) Natasha Kelley (Rosenberg, Texas) and Kyson Bunthuwong (El Cerrito, Calif.), the 2005 Visa Championships women's and men's junior all-around champions, respectively, top the four-person U.S. squad that will compete at the 2005 International Junior Gymnastics Competition Sept. 18-19 in Yokohama, Japan. Junior all-around silver medalists Bianca Flohr (Creston, Ohio) and Seung Tai Lee (Sorrento, Fla.) round out the athletes in the delegation. For more information, log on to www.usa-gymnastics.org.

Hockey: (Aug. 31) USA Hockey announced that Mike Sullivan (Duxbury, Mass.), head coach of the National Hockey League's Boston Bruins, and Keith Allain (Centerville, Mass.), goaltending coach of the NHL's St. Louis Blues, will serve as assistant coaches for the 2006 U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team that will compete in the Olympic Winter Games Feb. 15-26 in Torino, Italy. (Aug. 31) Jenny Potter (Eagan, Minn.) scored two second-period goals, including the eventual game-winner, as the 2005-06 U.S. Women's National Team defeated Finland, 5-2, in its opening game of the 2005 Women's Four Nations Cup. (Sept. 4) The U.S. Women's National Team won silver at the 2005 Women's Four Nations Cup after losing to Canada, 2-1, in the championship game. Chanda Gunn (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Shari Vogt (Richmond, Minn.) split time in net, combining to stop 31 shots on goal. Judo: (Sept. 3) USA Judo announced that athletes competing in the 2005 World Judo Championships Sept. 8-11 in Cairo, Egypt will receive additional funding incentives. (Sept. 3) Djamaldin Aliev (Centennial, Colo.) has been added to the USA Judo World Championships Team at 100kg following the withdrawal of 2004 Olympian Rhadi Ferguson (Colorado Springs, Colo.). (Sept. 3) Sixteen male and female judo athletes were crowned champions at the Fall Classic National Championships. Luge: (Sept. 3) The U.S. Luge Team won three medals at the International Luge Start Championships in Meransan, Italy and was led by Julia Clukey (Augusta, Maine), who placed first in the women's singles event. Clukey finished with a three-run time of 14.33, while teammate Ashley Hayden (Westborough, Mass.) placed second with a total time of 14.48. Megan Sweeney (Suffield, Conn.) finished seventh, Courtney Zablocki (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) placed ninth and Samantha Retrosi (Saranac Lake, N.Y.) claimed 12th. Brenna Margol (Sawyer, Mich.) and Erin Hamlin (Remsen, N.Y.) slid to identical 13th place results. In the men's doubles event, Preston Griffall (Salt Lake City, Utah) and Dan Joye (Carmel, N.Y.) combined to capture the bronze medal, while Mark Grimmette (Muskegon, Mich.) and Brian Martin (Palo Alto, Calif.) placed sixth and Matthew Mortensen (Huntington Station, N.Y.) and Garon Thorne (Orem, Utah) earned 10th. In the men's singles event, Tony Benshoof (White Bear Lake, Minn.) slid to a time of 13.85 to place fourth and teammate Dan Joye finished seventh. Jonathan Myles (Rumney, N.H.) posted a ninth-place finish, while Preston Griffall finished 14th. Matthew Mortensen claimed 19th and Chris Mazdzer (Saranac Lake, N.Y.) finished 26th. Rowing: (Sept. 3) Race times at the 2005 World Rowing Championships will not be listed as records due to the FISA Council's decision that times recorded on regatta courses with a significant water mass flow will not be considered world best times. (Sept. 3) Michelle Guerette (Bristol, Conn.) won a bronze medal in the women's single sculls with a time of 7:52.62, while the men's pair of Micah Boyd (St. Paul, Minn.) and Jordan Smith (Forestville, Calif.) with coxswain Chase Phillips (Woodbridge, Va.) placed third in 7:26.22 at the 2005 FISA World Rowing Championships. Scott Brown (Collingdale, Pa.) and Angela Madsen (Long Beach, Calif.) won their third consecutive gold medal in the adaptive trunk-arms double sculls with a time of 5:03.28, while Ron Harvey (Long Beach, Calif.) took third in the men's arms-only single sculls in 7:08.00. The men's four of Bryan Volpenhein (Cincinnati, Ohio), Beau Hoopman (Plymouth, Wis.), Dan Beery (Oaktown, Ind.) and Matt Deakin (San Francisco, Calif.) finished fifth in the final by clocking a time of 6:21.42. Caroline Lind (Greensboro, N.C.) and Lindsay Shoop (Charlottesville, Va.) finished sixth in 8:01.71 in the women's pair. The women's double sculls tandem of Megan Cooke (Los Gatos, Calif.) and Lia Pernell (Seattle, Wash.) finished second in its B final to place eighth overall, while lightweight women's single sculler Marika Page (San Rafael, Calif.) finished fourth in the B final for a 10th-place finish overall. The men's double sculls tandem of Sam Stitt (McLean, Va.) and J. Sloan DuRoss (South Portland, Maine) placed 10th overall with a fourth-place finish in the B final in a time of 6:37.94. (Sept. 3) The men's eight of coxswain Marcus McElhenney (Lansdowne, Pa.), Beau Hoopman, Bryan Volpenhein, Josh Inman (Hillsboro, Ore.), Dan Beery, Mike Blomquist (Greensboro, N.C.), Steven Coppola (Buffalo, N.Y.), Matt Deakin and Paul Daniels (Burlington, Wis.) clocked a 5:22.75 to win the gold medal at the 2005 FISA World Rowing Championships. The lightweight women's double sculls tandem of Julie Nichols (Livermore, Calif.) and Renee Hykel (Haverford, Pa.) won silver, finishing just three-tenths of a second behind Germany, while in the men's four with coxswain, the crew of coxswain Marcus McElhenney, Brett Newlin (Riverton, Wyo.), Pat Sullivan (St. Paul, Minn.), Matt Hughes (Ludington, Mich.) and Troy Kepper (Tallahassee, Fla.) also took second place in a time of 6:03.44. The women's eight of Mary Whipple (Sacramento, Calif.), Caroline Lind, Lindsay Shoop, Megan Dirkmaat (San Jose, Calif.), Sam Magee (Simsbury, Conn.), Anna Goodale (Camden, Maine), Susan Francia (Abington, Pa.), Liane Malcos (Carlisle, Mass.) and Sharon Kriz (Somerset, N.J.) finished fourth after being edged at the finish line by Australia. Finishing fifth with a time of 6:24.02 was the women's quadruple sculls squad of Anna Mickelson (Bellevue, Wash.), Caryn Davies (Ithaca, N.Y.), Margot Shumway (Westlake, Ohio) and Kelly Salchow (Cincinnati, Ohio). In the lightweight men's quadruple sculls, the crew of Rob Zechmann (Lincoln, Neb.), Greg Ruckman (Cincinnati, Ohio), Matt Muffelman (Mathews, Va.) and Sean Wolf (New Haven, Conn.) finished sixth. In the B finals, the lightweight men's four of John Wachter (Mt. Laurel, N.J.), Tom Paradiso (Blue Bell, Pa.), Simon Carcagno (Pennington, N.J.) and Rich Montgomery (Batavia, Ill.) finished ninth overall and the men's quadruple sculls of Ken Jurkowski (New Fairfield, Conn.), Dan Walsh (Norwalk, Conn.), Shane O'Mara (Tampa, Fla.) and Jonathan Burns (Vancouver, Wash.) also finished ninth overall. In the B final of the lightweight men's double sculls, Bjorn Larsen (Lake Stevens, Wash.) and Mike Altman (Marin County, Calif.) finished fourth for a 10th-place finish overall. Skiing: (Sept. 4) Ryan St. Onge (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) nailed his final jump to win the men's aerials competition at the Mount Buller Freestyle World Cup with 247.79 points and Eric Bergoust (Missoula, Mont.) placed second with 243.12 points. Jeret Peterson (Boise, Idaho) placed eighth to hold onto his World Cup leader's yellow bib. Two U.S. women placed in the top 10 with Emily Cook (Belmont, Mass.) in seventh and Kelly Hilliman (Tonawanda, N.Y.) in ninth. (Sept. 6) The U.S. Ski Team and the U.S. Olympic Committee named Steamboat, Colo. as the site for the 2006 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for freestyle skiing Dec. 30-31. Soccer: (Aug. 31) The U.S. Men's National Team will host Panama Oct. 12 in Foxboro, Mass. in the final qualifying game for the 2006 FIFA World Cup. (Sept. 3) The U.S. Men's National Team earned a berth in the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany with a 2-0 victory against Mexico. After a scoreless first half, Steve Ralston (St. Louis, Mo.) and DaMarcus Beasley (Fort Wayne, Ind.) each scored in a six-minute span to qualify the U.S. for its fifth consecutive World Cup. (Sept. 4) The U.S. Under-17 '89 Men's National Team fell to Portugal, 2-1, and finished second in the Pepsi International Championship. Sheanon Williams (Boston, Mass.) scored the lone U.S. goal in the loss. (Sept. 5) The U.S. Under-17 '88 Men's National Team defeated China, 2-0, in the first of two meetings as both countries prepare for the 2005 FIFA Under-17 World Championship in Peru beginning Sept. 16. Quavas Kirk (Aurora, Ill.) scored both goals for the U.S. (Sept. 6) Members of the U.S. Men's National Team are contributing game-worn jerseys that will be auctioned to raise funds for the Hurricane Katrina relief effort. (Sept. 6) U.S. Women's National Team forward Tiffeny Milbrett (Portland, Ore.) will play with Sweden's Sunanna SK until the end of September. (Sept. 6) ESPN HD, ABC HD and ESPN2 HD will combine to present live coverage in high definition of all 64 matches of the 2006 FIFA World Cup beginning June 9 and ending July 9. Tennis: (Aug. 31) Scoville Jenkins (Atlanta, Ga.) lost to Spain's Rafael Nadal, 6-4, 7-5, 6-4, in the second round of the US Open. (Aug. 31) Taylor Dent (Huntington Beach, Calif.) pulled out a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 second-round victory over Lars Burgsmuller of Germany. (Sept. 4) In a fourth-round matchup, older sister Venus Williams (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) defeated younger sister Serena Williams (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.), 7-6(5), 6-2, at the US Open. (Sept. 4) In a fiercely contested match that lasted 3 hours and 22 minutes, Taylor Dent lost in five sets to Lleyton Hewitt, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6, 2-6, 5-7. (Sept. 4) The 2005 US Open Junior Championships kicked off with 64 boys and 64 girls vying for titles and Grand Slam experience. (Sept. 5) Andre Agassi (Las Vegas, Nev.) overcame a tough five-set match to defeat Xavier Malisse, 6-3, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 4-6, 6-2, and become the first man 35 years or older to reach the quarterfinals since Jimmy Connors in 1991. James Blake (Tampa, Fla.) earned a 4-6, 7-5, 6-2, 6-3 victory over Spain's Tommy Robredo and on the women's side, Lindsay Davenport (Newport Beach, Calif.) beat France's Nathalie Dechy, 6-0, 6-3. (Sept. 5) The United States Tennis Association announced that the first week of the 2005 US Open set records in attendance, Web site traffic and merchandise sales. (Sept. 5) Robby Ginepri (Marietta, Ga.) pulled out a 6-3, 3-6, 6-7(8), 6-4, 6-0 fourth-round victory over Richard Gasquet of France. For more information, log on to www.usta.com.

Track and Field: (Aug. 31) The USA Track & Field Cross Country Council announced that Boulder, Colo. will host the 2007 USA Cross Country Championships Feb. 17, 2007. (Aug. 31) USATF added an athlete representatives page to its Web site that contains a full directory, contact information and client list for all USATF Authorized Athlete Representatives. (Sept. 1) Mel Larsen (Springfield, Ill.) set a world record in the M80 division in the 80m hurdles at the 2005 World Masters Championships, clocking a time of 14.75 to better the mark of 14.91 set in 2003 by Juuji Tanaka of Japan. In the 110m hurdles, Karl Smith (Alexandria, Va.) ran 14.70 to tie the M45 world record set in 1979 by Thorlaksson Valbjorn of Iceland. (Sept. 2) Fans can vote for the world's top track and field performances and athletes of 2005 until Sept. 8. Dominique Arnold (Diamond Bar, Calif.) crossed the finish line in 13.20 to win the men's 100m hurdles. In the women's 400m hurdles, Sandra Glover (Sugarland, Texas) placed first in a time of 54.17. (Sept. 5) Abdi Abdirahman (Tuscon, Ariz.) set a pending U.S. 20km record of 58:42 to win the men's title at the USA 20km Championships. Blake Russell (Acton, Mass.) took charge of the women's field by the two-mile mark and easily won the first U.S. title of her career in 1:06:43. (Sept. 6) The USA 5km Championships will be held Sept. 11 in Providence, R.I. (Sept. 6) Team USA Minnesota has selected Ryan Kleimenhagen (Oak Creek, Wis.) to join the post-collegiate distance training center based in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minn. (Sept. 6) The USA Track & Field National Club Co-Ed 10km Team Challenge will take place Oct. 9 in conjunction with the 10th anniversary of the EPCOT International Food and Wine Festival in Orlando, Fla. Beach: Competition in the 2005 SWATCH-FIVB U-21 Beach Volleyball World Championships begins Sept. 7 in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. Indoor: Tayyiba Haneef (Laguna Hills, Calif.) scored a match-high 16 points to lead the USA Women's National Team to a 3-1 victory over Canada in the 2005 NORCECA Women's Continental Championship. Water Polo: (Sept. 1) The U.S. Men's Junior National Team lost to Italy, 16-6, in its first game of the International Six Nations Water Polo Tournament. (Sept. 2) J.W. Krumpholz (Tustin, Calif.) scored two goals as the U.S. Men's Junior National Team fell to Greece, 15-5, at the International Six Nations Water Polo Tournament. Water Skiing: (Sept. 1) USA Water Ski has selected Regina Jaquess (Suwanee, Ga.) and Jimmy Siemers (Round Rock, Texas) as its Female and Male Athletes of the Month for August. The U.S. Elite Water Ski Team was selected as Team of the Month. (Sept. 4) The U.S. Wakeboard Team won its second consecutive world team title at the World Wakeboard Council's sixth annual Wakeboard World Championships. U.S. team members Robert Soven (Longwood, Fla.) and Heather Johnson (Orlando, Fla.) won individual gold medals in the boys' and junior women's divisions, respectively. Phillip Soven (Longwood, Fla.) took second in the open men's division and Jimmy LaRiche (Boca Raton, Fla.) placed second in the boys' division. (Sept. 6) The U.S. Junior Water Ski Team compiled 8,633.5 points and the U.S. 17 to 21 Water Ski Team tallied 8,449.2 points as each won titles at the 2005 Can Am Challenge. On the girls' side, Alex Lauretano (Morris, Conn.) won titles in slalom, tricks, jumping and overall. In boys' action, Storm Selsor (Fremont, Calif.) won the overall title, Jonathan Travers (Okahumpka, Fla.) won slalom and Adam Pickos (Santa Rosa Beach, Fla.) placed first in tricks.
