Flowery Branch, GA (My Sportsbook) -
Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick will not start Sunday's game against the
New York Giants because of a sprained right shoulder. Doug Johnson will, instead, make his third career start.
Vick has not practiced this week because of the injury, but head coach Dan Reeves has not ruled the lefthander out entirely.
"He [Vick] won't start. He needs to practice," Reeves said Thursday. "He hasn't practiced for two days, so Doug [Johnson] will start and we'll just make a determination whether it will be two or three [active quarterbacks for the game this Sunday]."
Kurt Kittner, a rookie from Illinois, is the team's third quarterback.
Vick injured his non-throwing shoulder in last week's 20-6 loss to Tampa Bay. He was hurt early in the third quarter when he was sacked by Simeon Rice and landed hard on his right shoulder, suffering a sprained AC joint. X-rays were negative.
"It is getting better," Vick said Wednesday. "It is still sore, but it is getting better. I am getting as much treatment as I can -- three times a day. I don't know if I will be ready by Sunday. It's still doubtful. We will see how it feels as the week goes on."
The 22-year-old Vick completed just 4-of-12 passes for 37 yards and was sacked three times before heading to the locker room on Sunday. He has completed 58.4 percent of his passes for 586 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions in four games this season.
Johnson took the reps with the first team offense for the second straight day on Thursday and will make his first start since his rookie season in 2000. He took over for Vick last Sunday and connected on 13-of-25 passes for 150 yards with three interceptions.
Johnson started two games in his rookie year of 2000.
