St. Louis, MO (My Sportsbook) - St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa and San Francisco head man Dusty Baker have both been fined an undisclosed amount as a result of a bench-clearing incident during Game 1 of the NLCS Wednesday at Busch Stadium. The decision was handed down by baseball's vice president for on-field operations, Bob Watson, who attended Wednesday's game. The incident occurred in the fifth inning when Kenny Lofton stepped to the plate with two outs and Cardinals reliever Mike Crudale greeted him with a high inside pitch. The Giants centerfielder took exception to the location of the pitch and screamed at the mound. St. Louis catcher Mike Matheny and Lofton then exchanged words before both benches cleared. No punches were thrown, but there were a few heated arguments, including one between La Russa and Baker. "It was obvious in that bench-clearing situation there were some things that definitely violated the rules that we have and those things were addressed with both organizations," Watson said. The penalties handed down also included a stipulation that any player not on the active roster cannot remain in the dugout during the NLCS. "I think (Kenny) Lofton should pay both fines," La Russa said.
