Cleveland, OH (My Sportsbook) - The Cleveland Indians announced Wednesday that they have signed free agent outfielder Wendell Magee to a minor league contract for 2003 with an invitation to major league spring training camp. Magee, 30, spent the last three full seasons in the big leagues with the Detroit Tigers, posting career-highs in virtually every offensive category in 2002. He hit .271 with 35 RBI in a career-best 97 games for the Tigers last season. Magee's 2002 season ended on September 1 after he elected to have surgery on his right big toe, an injury that bothered him all season. Magee owns a career batting average of .247 with 24 home runs and 122 RBI in 386 major league games. He made his debut in the big leagues in 1996 with Philadelphia after being selected in the 12th round of the 1994 draft.
