(My Sportsbook) - Mats Sundin might have been developing a complex.
The Maple Leafs lost their first two games with the Swedish star, who had been sidelined for six tilts with a shoulder injury. This came after the club flourished without him, posting a 4-1-0-1 mark.
Well, Sundin broke the jinx on Tuesday night, scoring with 7:59 left in the third period as the Leafs rallied for a 3-2 win over the Calgary Flames at Air Canada Centre. Sundin and Nik Antropov each had a goal and an assist for the Leafs, who extended their home unbeaten streak to 13 games (12-0-1).
Robert Reichel also scored and Ed Belfour made 31 saves.
"Any time you come home after a long road trip, there is a tendency to let down," Sundin said. "We got off to a slow start and Eddie [Belfour] obviously was huge for us again. But I thought we had a few more shots but they didn't show up upstairs [with statisticians]. It made it look a little worse than it was."
Craig Berube and Stephane Yelle scored for Calgary, which has dropped four in a row. Roman Turek made 19 saves in the setback.
Toronto scored at 8:35 of the third period to knot the score at 2-2. Jonas Hoglund backhanded a pass to Reichel, who wristed a shot from the right side of the crease. Turek was able to get a piece of the puck with his left skate, but Reichel scored his sixth goal of the year.
Sundin then scored to give the Leafs their first lead since early in the second period. Antropov carried the puck into the Calgary zone and dropped a pass off for Sundin at the top of the right circle. Sundin then wheeled towards the net and made a nice move to beat Flames defender Toni Lydman before lifting the puck into the upper right corner of the net.
Belfour needed to make just six saves in the final period to keep the Flames off the board.
The Flames scored twice early in the second stanza to grab a 2-1 advantage. Berube's goal came just 2:14 into the period to even the score at 1-1. Scott Nichol won a faceoff in the left circle back to Denis Gauthier at the point. Gauthier then slapped a shot at the net and the puck hit off Berube's skate before beating Belfour low.
Yelle scored exactly three minutes later to give Calgary a 2-1 edge. Chris Clark was stopped in front, but Yelle was able to backhand the puck between Belfour's pads from the left side of the crease.
The Maple Leafs were outshot 15-1 in the first 20 minutes, but scored the opening period's only goal. Antropov scored with 1:22 left to give Toronto a 1-0 edge. Sundin sent a pass from the right boards and Antropov, who was charging at the net, was able to fight off Lydman and deflect the puck past Turek.
