(My Sportsbook) - The
Tampa Bay Buccaneers will try to post their fifth consecutive victory this Sunday when they host the
Cleveland Browns at Raymond James Stadium.
Tampa Bay has ripped off four consecutive wins to pull into a tie for first place in the NFC South with New Orleans. The Bucs have dominated their opponents during their winning streak, outscoring them 106-27.
Jon Gruden's club continued its impressive play last week, bruising and battering Atlanta's Michael Vick en route to a 20-6 win. In fact, the Bucs' defense knocked Vick out of the game with a shoulder injury.
"We have some deadly bullets on this team," said All-Pro defensive tackle Warren Sapp. "Coach says there should be an investigation, 'cause it looks like there are 12 of us out there right now."
Tampa Bay's defense has returned to its old self this year led by Sapp and linebacker Derrick Brooks. The Bucs wreaked havoc with the Falcons last week, sacking them four times and registering four interceptions.
Gruden's defense took advantage of Vick's replacement Doug Johnson, picking him off three times. Dwight Smith had two interceptions, while Sapp and Brooks added a pick apiece. Brooks returned his 15 yards for a touchdown to seal the win.
Brooks, the defending NFC Defensive Player of the Week, has been outstanding in the first portion of the season with four interceptions --- three for scores -- and a sack. He has also posted 48 tackles on the year. Gruden is extremely impressed with his All-Pro linebacker.
"If you intercept four passes and return three for touchdowns and have 48 tackles, you ought to be up for a little bit more than Player of the Week," said Gruden. "I'd vote for him for President. I don't know if that will have any say in our society or not, but I voted for him."
The Bucs have been terrific against both the run and the pass this season. Tampa Bay ranks first in the NFC and third in the NFL against the run (81.2 ypg), while being third in the NFC and fifth in the NFL versus the pass (180.8 ypg).
JOHNSON & JOHNSON
The Tampa Bay offense has become much more than just an afterthought nowadays, posting 25.2 points per contest, which is good for fourth in the AFC. Gruden's west coast offense has helped Brad Johnson throw for 234 yards per contest.
Brad Johnson seems to enjoy the short passing game and it shows as he owns the fourth best passer rating in the NFC (89.8). The system has helped the veteran quarterback become more efficient, completing 63.1 percent of his passes. He has still been sacked nine times this year.
Brad Johnson has limited his crucial mistakes, though, tossing for 1,226 yards and seven touchdowns, while only being intercepted three times. Last week, Brad Johnson completed 17-of-31 passes for 261 yards and a score against Atlanta.
Despite his occasional complaints, top wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson has benefited from the new system. Keyshawn had a huge game against the Falcons, grabbing six balls for 131 yards and a touchdown. With the score, Keyshawn has already matched his output from a year ago.
COMING UP: The Bucs have back-to-back road contests against Philadelphia and Carolina coming up.
