Denver, CO (My Sportsbook) - The Colorado Rockies have agreed to contract terms with infielder Jose Hernandez and pitcher Steve Reed. Both deals are for one year. Hernandez was an All-Star shortstop for Milwaukee last season, but could move to third base for the 2003 campaign. The Rockies are in need of a third baseman after Todd Zeile signed as a free agent with the New York Yankees. The 33-year-old Hernandez hit 24 homers and drove in 73 runs last season with a career-high batting average of .288. However, he also struck out 188 times, one shy of Bobby Bonds' major league record. An 11-year veteran, Hernandez has a career average of .255 with Milwaukee, Atlanta, the Chicago Cubs, Texas and Cleveland. Reed split last season with San Diego and the New York Mets, posting a 2-5 record with one save and a 2.01 earned run average in 64 appearances. The Mets acquired him at the trade deadline. The righthander, who will turn 37 in March, pitched for the Rockies from 1993 through 1997 and went 25-18 with a 3.68 ERA. He has also played with San Francisco, Cleveland and Atlanta in his 11-year big league career.
