Calgary, Alberta (My Sportsbook) - The
Calgary Flames target their second consecutive win this evening when they welcome the
Edmonton Oilers to the Saddledome in a battle of Northwest Division foes.
Rob Niedermayer scored at 2:42 of overtime to lift Calgary over Los Angeles, 2-1, on Saturday.
Craig Conroy also lit the lamp for the Flames, who put the brakes on a five- game winless streak (0-4-1), which came on the heels of a five-game unbeaten streak to start coach Darryl Sutter's tenure. It was Calgary's first overtime win in nearly a year.
Niedermayer posted his fourth goal of the season on a breakaway in the extra session. LA's Jason Allison had the puck behind the Calgary net and fed a pass out into the slot. However, no King player was there to receive the puck and it slid into the neutral zone. Niedermayer utilized his speed and controlled the puck at the Kings' blue line, where he skated in all alone and beat Felix Potvin five-hole.
Niedermayer's shot was the only one of overtime for either team, as the Flames earned their first OT victory since January 28, 2002.
Martin Gelinas has three goals in five games and six in the last nine.
Calgary, which is the only club to not have at least 100 goals, will be playing the third installment of a five-game homestand tonight. At home this season the Flames are 6-11-6-1 and are 4-2-2 in their last eight in their arena.
Edmonton, meanwhile, enters Monday's contest on a sour note after falling 3-2 in overtime to the Nashville Predators on Saturday.
Jason Chimera scored and Mike York added a goal and an assist for the Oilers, who suffered just their second loss in eight contests (5-2-1). Jussi Markkanen made 23 stops for Edmonton.
York has six goals and 11 points in his last eight games, while Ethan Moreau has only one goal in 17 games.
On the milestone watch, Oilers head coach Craig MacTavish needs just one win to reach the century mark in career coaching victories. He ranks third on the Oilers' all-time coaching list for wins behind Glen Sather (464) and Ron Low (139).
MacTavish is on the verge of becoming the fastest Oilers coach to record 100 career victories, since Sather recorded his 100th victory in his 231st game behind the bench.
The Oilers, who trail the Northwest Division-leading Vancouver Canucks by six points, will head home for three games following tonight's affair. Away from home this season the Oilers are 11-8-2-3, and are unbeaten in their last three (2-0-1) on opposition ice.
Edmonton, which defeated Calgary earlier in the season, is 8-2-2 in the last 12 overall matchups and is 4-1-2 in its last seven trips to Calgary.
