Pittsburgh, PA (My Sportsbook) - The players' association filed a grievance Tuesday on behalf of Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Pat Meares, stating that he is healthy enough to play. Meares, who has an injured left hand, has been keep on the disabled list all season. The Pirates claim that the injury prevents him from playing the level needed to perform in the major leagues There is a tentative hearing date slated for November 1 if the two sides do not settle. The 34-year-old Meares suffered the injury during an exhibition game in April 1999. He broke a bone at the bottom of his hand, causing him to lose significant strength in the hand. He only played in 21 games that season, but the Pirates still gave him a $15 million, four-year contract extension. Meares, who is owed $3.75 million in 2003, wants the club to release him so he can try out with another team. The Pirates filed a disability claim with their insurance provider to pay for a portion of Meares' salary. By releasing him, the Pirates might not be able to file the claim.
