Minneapolis, MN (My Sportsbook) - The Minnesota Twins avoided salary arbitration with first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz when the two sides agreed to a one-year, $1.75 million contract on Tuesday. Mientkiewicz is coming off a disappointing 2002 campaign for the AL Central champion Twins. He batted .261 with 10 home runs and 64 RBI in 143 games. In 2001, he hit .306 with 15 home runs and 74 RBI in 151 games and also won the Gold Glove Award. The 28-year-old Mientkiewicz asked for $2.05 million, but was only offered $1.45 million by the Twins. He made only $285,000 last season.
