Boston, MA (My Sportsbook) - The Boston Red Sox have agreed to terms with free agent first baseman/designated hitter David Ortiz on a contract for 2003. Ortiz, 27, recorded career-highs with 20 home runs, 75 RBI, and a .500 slugging percentage while posting a .272 batting average and a .339 on-base percentage in 125 games with Minnesota last season. The left-handed batter was used mostly as the designated hitter, though he turned in a .990 fielding percentage at first base, making just one error in 103 innings in the field (15 games). In 132 career games at first base, Ortiz owns a .991 fielding percentage, committing just nine errors in 1,039 total chances. Ortiz is a career .266 hitter with 108 doubles, 58 home runs, 238 RBI, a .348 on-base percentage, and a .461 slugging percentage in 455 games with Minnesota (1997-2002). He hit .282 with 10 home runs, 63 RBI, and a career- high 36 doubles in 130 games in 2000, his first full season in the majors. He was limited to 89 games due to a fractured right wrist in 2001. He was released by the Twins after the 2002 season.
