(My Sportsbook) - The Seattle SuperSonics currently find themselves just four games behind eighth-seeded Houston in the Western Conference despite winning just three times in their last 11 games.
But battling their way into the postseason won't be easy, as the Sonics (19-23) also have to jump the Los Angeles Lakers (19-23) and the suddenly-hot Golden State Warriors (20-23) in the standings.
If Seattle is going anywhere this season it will need its young players - such as Rashard Lewis, Desmond Mason and Vladimir Radmanovic - to give "The Glove" a hand.
The Sonics halted a two-game skid on Saturday thanks to a career night from Radmanovic, who led Seattle to a 95-83 victory over the Grizzlies in Memphis. The second-year player poured in a career-high 29 points on 9-of-15 shooting, including a career-best six three-pointers on 11 attempts.
"Everybody knows who can shoot and who cannot shoot," Radmanovic said. "They probably wanted to stop something else, but when you stop something else, then something else is going to be open. I think that's what happened."
Nineteen of Radmanovic's 29 points came in the second half, helping Seattle outscore Memphis 49-32 in the final 24 minutes.
Memphis climbed within six points at 87-81 with less than four minutes to play. However, the Sonics finished the game with an 8-2 burst, sparked by back-to-back three-pointers from Radmanovic, to close out the victory.
"Vlad was definitely hot," Sonics coach Nate McMillan said. "We looked a little confused at times against the zone. We had to make some big shots, and time after time, [Radmanovic] came with those big shots."
Lewis collected 22 points and 10 rebounds for Seattle, which salvaged the final contest of a three-game road trip. The Sonics also snapped a four-game road losing streak.
Gary Payton, who finished with 18 points, six assists and five rebounds, was happy to see his teammates step up.
"They've got to do that more often," Payton said of Radmanovic and Lewis. "They're up and down. They had a good game tonight, and they see when they have good games it takes a lot of pressure off a lot of guys."
Both Radmanovic and Lewis have been disappointments this season. Radmanovic is averaging 10.8 points and 4.6 rebounds in 39 games. Meanwhile, Lewis is averaging 17.3 and 6.9 rebounds in 40 starts, but hasn't been the consistent offensive compliment to Payton that the Sonics had hoped for when they signed him to a multi-year deal in the offseason.
The Sonics return to KeyArena for a three-game homestand starting Tuesday against the Warriors.
