New York Yankees will attempt to go ahead in the race for the top record in the American League this evening when they battle the
Tampa Bay Devil Rays at Yankee Stadium.
New York pulled even with Oakland for the best record after a 6-0 win over Tampa Bay on Tuesday. The A's dropped an 8-7 decision to Seattle on Tuesday.
Mike Mussina tossed a two-hit shutout to pace New York to the victory. Mussina (17-10), who had lost his last four home starts, struck out a season- high 12 batters while walking just two. The right-handed twirler recorded the 20th shutout of his career, with the last coming on August 28 against Boston.
Jason Giambi hit a pair of two-run homers to lead the Yanks' offensive attack. Giambi finished 4-for-4 and Raul Mondesi added two RBI as the Yankees won for the fourth time in their last five games.
Bernie Williams picked up his 200th hit of the season to mark the second time in his career that he has reached that plateau. In 1999, he set the franchise mark for most hits in a single season by a switch hitter with 202.
Williams also joined Alfonso Soriano, who has 206 hits, to give the Yankees two players with at least 200 hits in a season for the fifth time in club history, and for just the second time since 1937. Joe DiMaggio and Lou Gehrig accomplished the feat in 1937 before it was matched by Derek Jeter and Williams in 1999.
He has 39 homers and 41 stolen bases on the year. Soriano is racing the Expos' Vladimir Guerrero to become the fourth player in baseball history with 40 home runs and 40 stolen bases in one season.
Guerrero is just one homer away from the mark. The only players to accomplish the feat are Jose Canseco, Barry Bonds and Alex Rodriguez.
Aubrey Huff and Toby Hall notched the two hits for the Devil Rays, who lost for just the third time in their last nine outings.
Travis Harper (5-9) took the loss after being roughed up for six runs on five hits in just three innings of work. He fanned three and walked two.
New York will send 40-year-old fireballer Roger Clemens to the hill this evening. Clemens has won two of his last three decisions, including a win over Detroit last week. The Dayton, OH native limited the Tigers to just five hits and one run over six frames, while walking five and fanning four.

Clemens has struggled on the road this year, posting just a 4-5 record with a 6.29 ERA in 14 contests.
Tampa Bay will reply with Tanyon Sturtze this evening. Sturtze snapped a four- game losing streak with a victory over Toronto last week. The righthander surrendered five hits and five runs over eight innings, while fanning eight and walking two in the win.
Sturtze has struggled against the Yankees this year, going 0-2 with an 8.31 ERA. For his career, Sturtze has tallied a 3-3 record with a 5.68 ERA.
New York leads the season series, 12-5. The Devil Rays have gone 2-6 in the Bronx this year. Since last season, the Yankees are 14-3 at home against Tampa Bay.
Tampa Bay is 24-52 on the road this season, while the Yankees are 51-28 at home.
