Utah head coach Jerry Sloan was ejected in the first quarter after he pushed an official in the chest. Sloan and Courtney Kirkland exchanged words face-to- face after Sloan had argued that Kings guard Doug Christie stepped out of bounds right near the Utah bench.
Peja Stojakovic poured in a game-high 32 points on 5-of-10 shooting from three-point territory for Sacramento, which has lost three straight. Mike Bibby added 18 points and Vlade Divac scored 10 and pulled in six boards.
Kings forward Chris Webber sprained his left ankle in the second quarter and was forced to leave the game. He came down awkwardly on Jazz forward Scott Padgett's foot as he was attempting a hook shot early in the quarter and limped off the court with the aid of some teammates.
Utah trailed by nine after 12 minutes, but took control of the game in the second quarter, opening the frame with a 20-3 run. Stockton made two free throws to end the burst, giving the Jazz a 43-35 edge with three minutes to go. Sacramento never got it going before the half and scored just eight points in the quarter as Utah took a 53-40 lead at the break.
The Jazz saw their lead slowly dwindle in the third quarter as Sacramento mounted a comeback. Divac made two free throws near the 2:00 mark that pulled the Kings within five points at 72-67. Sacramento was able to keep the deficit at five as they trailed, 76-71, heading into the final frame.
Utah extended its lead to 80-71 in the first minute of the fourth and the Kings were never able to pull closer than six the rest of the way as the Jazz cruised to victory.
The first five minutes of play were tightly contested and Sacramento held a slim, 11-10 advantage around the 7:00 mark. The Kings then extended their lead to nine when Stojakovic drilled a three to make it 23-14 with just over four minutes to play in the first quarter. Sacramento was able to hold on to that cushion and carried a 32-23 advantage into the second.
