(My Sportsbook) - As many in the NBA know, the remedy for a losing streak is a matchup with the
Los Angeles Clippers. The
Phoenix Suns took advantage of a visit to LA on Friday, posting a 98-92 victory over the Clippers to snap a three-game slide and win for just the second time in their last seven outings.
Stephon Marbury collected 19 points and 15 assists for the Suns, and received help from a couple of rookies. Amare Stoudemire had 17 points and seven rebounds and Casey Jacobsen also scored 17 on 7-of-13 shooting.
Jacobsen, a first-year player out of Stanford, came up big down the stretch for Phoenix, scoring eight of his points in the fourth quarter.
"I don't think it was that they didn't give me enough respect. They gave everyone too much," Jacobsen said. "I just took advantage of the situation and playing with guys like Shawn (Marion) and Steph, you have to double those guys. Coach puts me on the floor, so that I can score when those guys do get double-teamed."
Jacobsen, who is averaging 6.0 points in 17.3 minutes this season, also scored a career-high 19 points against the Clippers back on December 27 in a 108-95 Phoenix win.
"He seems to have a career night every time he plays us, 19 points at his place, 17 tonight," Clippers coach Alvin Gentry said. "We just have to do a better job on him. I can understand him making outside shots but to push us down and be able to drive to the basket, I can't quite understand."
The Clippers owned a one-point lead at intermission and began the second half with a 13-3 surge to open a 56-45 advantage. But the Suns responded with an 18-5 burst to take a 63-61 lead with just 2:00 left in the third.
The Suns held the Clippers to only one field goal in the final six minutes of the fourth quarter, as Phoenix used a 13-3 run to take control late in the game. Jacobsen had two buckets during the stretch, which put Phoenix ahead, 92-84, with 1:16 to play.
After Los Angeles pulled within four, Jacobsen scored on a layup and with only seven seconds remaining to seal the victory.
"I enjoy going to the basket more than shooting three-pointers," said Jacobsen, who hit just 1-of-5 shots from beyond the arc. "I like making three-pointers because they are game-changing plays. But I'd rather go to the rack and finish at the basket. To me it is more enjoyable. I like the contact."
Shawn Marion finished with 15 points and Bo Outlaw had 14 points and eight boards for the Suns, who won for just the second time in their last nine road games. The team improved its overall road mark to just 9-17.
On the flip side, Phoenix is 18-4 at America West Arena, where the squad plays its next six games. Fortunately for Phoenix and Jacobsen, the Suns welcome the Clippers on February 11.
