(My Sportsbook) - The eternal question in Memphis is whether the young Grizzlies will ever turn the corner on success. Sidney Lowe couldn't get them to produce and veteran coach Hubie Brown isn't doing a whole lot better.
Brown, who took the reins of the squad early in the year, must be aging eons by the day. Nonetheless, he keeps plugging away, pushing the immature bunch in practice and in the games. His efforts have been fruitless as of late, though, considering his team has dropped five in a row.
Memphis' skid continued against the lowly Denver Nuggets on Sunday in the form of a 93-78 loss. The Grizzlies shot an atrocious 35 percent from the field and 23 percent from long distance. Memphis also committed 17 turnovers in the ugly defeat to the last place Nuggets.
"I think we're trying to do so much so fast that we're not letting the game come to us," said Grizzlies guard Wesley Person. "We're pressing too much instead of relaxing. We're thinking too much instead of letting a good rhythm come to us."
The blame could be placed on a variety of players in the loss, as six Grizzlies had two or more turnovers. Gordan Giricek and Jason Williams led the roster with three miscues apiece. Giricek and Williams combined to hit just five of 17 shots as well.
Pau Gasol put up decent numbers with 13 points and 11 rebounds, but he managed to hit just 5-of-17 attempts from the field. The Grizzlies combined to drill just 31 percent from the field in the second half.
"You're not going to shoot 11-of-36 in a [second] half and beat anyone in this league," Brown said. "We got outhustled, we got outmuscled, we got beat to every loose ball. They scored on 10-of-17 second shots."
Rookie Drew Gooden led the Grizzlies in scoring with 16 points, while Giricek chipped in 10 points. Memphis was embarrassed on the boards, 55-38, in the losing effort.
"We've had a pattern of poor execution in the last 10 days," Shane Battier said. "This was a game of little things gone bad for us."
Memphis was playing short-handed against Denver, as Brevin Knight (right wrist sprain) and Stromile Swift (right hand sprain) sat the contest out. Both players are listed as day-to-day.
The Grizzlies are now 20 games under .500 (13-33) and reside just 2 1/2 contests out of the cellar in the Midwest Division. Memphis must work fast if it hopes to gain some confidence prior to the All-Star Break.
The Grizzlies have just a pair of games left prior to a week-long hiatus for the All-Star festivities. Memphis will attempt to garner some respect when they face the Golden State Warriors on Monday night.
