Seattle, WA (My Sportsbook) - Matt Hasselbeck threw for 226 yards and four touchdowns, as the
Seattle Seahawks won their franchise-record ninth straight game by routing the
San Francisco 49ers, 41-3, at Qwest Field.
Hasselbeck completed 21-of-25 passes and spread the ball to eight different receivers, including six to Bobby Engram for 65 yards and two touchdowns. Hasselbeck was also intercepted once.
Shaun Alexander rushed for 108 yards and a score for the Seahawks, who have won their last two games by a combined 83-3 margin.
Seattle (11-2), the NFC West champions, stayed on the inside track for home field advantage throughout the conference playoffs with the victory.
Alex Smith completed just 9-of-22 passes for 77 yards and an interception, while Kevan Barlow had just as little success on the ground with only 33 yards on 11 carries.
San Francisco (2-11) continued its track toward a high first-round draft pick with its sixth straight loss. The 49ers are 1-11 since an opening day victory.
The Seahawks dominated every statistical category, holding a 438-113 edge in total yards and rushing for 185 yards to San Francisco's 62. Seattle beat the 49ers for a sixth straight time and swept the season series, as the Seahawks recorded a 27-25 win at San Francisco on November 20.
Seattle turned the game into a rout behind a large second quarter.
The Seahawks went on an 85-yard march, in which Alexander carried five times for 35 yards. Hasselbeck completed a 3rd-and-goal pass to tight end Jerramy Stevens for an eight-yard touchdown on the first play of the second quarter.
Smith fumbled on the first play of the 49ers' next series, and Seattle took advantage of the miscue immediately. Hasselbeck found an open Joe Jurevicius for a 21-yard score on the first play after the turnover to increase the lead to 21-3 with 14:38 left in the half.
Barlow hauled in a 24-yard pass to the Seattle 37 on the next drive, but a promising start quickly turned into another drive that ended with a mistake. On 3rd-and-19 from the 46, Smith was intercepted by Lofa Tatupu, who returned it inside 49ers territory at the 46.
After moving the ball to the 18-yard line, a holding penalty and sack moved Seattle back, but Josh Brown salvaged the possession with a 52-yard field goal to increase the advantage to 24-3.
Hasselbeck's arm helped put the game out of reach early in the third quarter. He tossed an 11-yard strike to Stevens, then found Engram for a 12-yard completion to the 49ers 11-yard line. Engram's second touchdown catch of the game, a seven-yard reception, increased the advantage to 31-3 with 7:13 remaining in the third.
A quick 69-yard march, supported by a 45-yard pass interference penalty, enlarged the margin to 38-3. Alexander finally got into the act with a three- yard TD plunge with 1:29 left in the third.
"Those five guys and Max (Strong) have set high goals and those goals are higher than mine," said Alexander about the play of his blockers. "It's nice to have guys who love what they do."
Brown kicked another 52-yard field goal with 5:15 left to round out the scoring.
It didn't take Hasselbeck long to stake Seattle to a 7-0 advantage. What started out as a methodical march with consecutive seven-yard completions to Jurevicius and Alexander ended with a 28-yard touchdown toss to Engram with 10:40 left in the first.
San Francisco took its initial possession and drove into Joe Nedney field goal range. A heavy dose of Barlow and a 3rd-and-8 completion to Brandon Lloyd for 14 yards set up Nedney's 39-yard field goal with 4:35 to go in the first.
Game Notes
Alexander has now reached the 100-yard plateau in nine straight contests versus the NFC West. That is the longest 100-yard rushing streak versus division opponents since 1970...Alexander needs four rushing yards to reach 1,500 yards for the second straight season...Seattle is 7-0 at Qwest Field this season. The Seahawks' final home game will be December 24 versus the currently unbeaten Indianapolis Colts.
