Anaheim, CA (My Sportsbook) - The defending Stanley Cup-champion Detroit Red Wings close out a season-opening road trip tonight when they visit the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim at the Pond.
Detroit began its quest for a repeat with a 6-3 victory in San Jose on Thursday night, but suffered a 3-2 loss in Los Angeles Saturday. The Kings jumped out to a lead a mere 27 seconds in and put three goals on the board in the first period. Kris Draper and Brett Hull scored in the losing cause, while Curtis Joseph allowed three goals on 26 shots for his first loss as a Wing.
Hull, who assisted on Draper's tally as well, now sits two points shy of reaching the 1,250 mark for his NHL career.
Detroit would simply like to put Saturday's loss behind it, as the Red Wings have had their share of trouble winning in Los Angeles. The defeat dropped them to 0-4-1 in their last five regular season trips to the Staples Center.
The Red Wings return home after tonight and will raise their Stanley Cup championship banner Thursday when the Montreal Canadiens come calling to Joe Louis Arena.
Anaheim, meanwhile, will hold some festivities of its own tonight, as the Ducks will commemorate their 10th anniversary. The club will honor several members of the inaugural 1993-94 team.
This year's version of the Mighty Ducks is off to a 1-1 start, as it followed up a 4-3 season-opening win at St. Louis with a 4-2 loss to Dallas. Friday against the Stars, Anaheim fell behind 3-0 and didn't get on the board until a Steve Rucchin power-play goal early in the third period. The Stars iced things with an empty net in the final minutes, but the Ducks' Matt Cullen salvaged some pride to make it 4-2 with 18 seconds remaining.
Goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere allowed three goals on 20 shots before yielding to rookie Martin Gerber at the start of the third. Gerber stopped all five shots he faced.
The Ducks, 15-19-5-2 at the Pond last season, open a four-game homestand tonight. The set continues against the Kings on Wednesday and also includes visits from the Canucks and Avalanche.
Detroit went 2-1-1 against Anaheim last season and is 7-2-1 in the last 10 meetings overall. Going back even further, the Wings are 14-4-2 in the last 20 clashes, including a 3-0-1 mark in their last four trips to the Pond.
