Detroit, MI (My Sportsbook) - A pair of bitter Western Conference rivals rekindle their series this evening when the
Colorado Avalanche face off with the Detroit Red Wings in a rematch of the 2002 Conference Finals.
Detroit got the best of the Avs in the 2002 postseason, outlasting them in a thrilling seven-game series. The Red Wings also defeated Colorado in their first meeting of the season, 4-2, on January 16. Overall, Detroit has won four straight regular season meetings, five of six and seven of the last nine.
Colorado has been unsuccessful in trips to Motown over the last few years, dropping five of six and 10 of the last 16 overall.
The Avalanche have been surging as of late, posting a 4-0-2 mark in its last six games. Colorado has been successful on the road as well, tallying a 4-0-1 record in its last five such contests. Despite their recent success, the Avalanche still reside in fourth place in the Northwest Division with 58 points.
Colorado continued its hot streak on Tuesday with a 3-2 overtime victory over the Boston Bruins. Greg de Vries scored with less than a minute remaining in overtime to give the Avalanche the win. Peter Forsberg had a goal and assisted on the game-winner for the Avalanche. Forsberg and Milan Hejduk each extended their scoring streaks to five games.
Scott Parker also scored for Colorado and Patrick Roy turned aside 28 shots for the win. Roy improved to 16-11-11 between the pipes this season.
Detroit is just off the pace in the Central Division, only two points behind first-place St. Louis. The Red Wings have skated to back-to-back ties and haven't won (0-2-2-0) in the last four games.
On Tuesday, Detroit managed just a 5-5 deadlock with the lowly Nashville Predators. Luc Robitaille and Pavel Datsyuk each posted a goal and an assist, while Henrik Zetterberg, Kris Draper and Brendan Shanahan also tallied for Detroit. Robitaille ended a 20-game goal drought, scoring for the first time since December 17.
Curtis Joseph stopped 23 shots for the Red Wings in the tie. Joseph is 19-13-6 on the year between the pipes.
The Wings' Brett Hull was held goal-less for the fifth straight game and remains one shy of becoming the sixth member of the 700-club, joining Wayne Gretzky (894), Gordie Howe (801), Marcel Dionne (731), Phil Esposito (717) and Mike Gartner (708) in the distinguished group.
