(My Sportsbook) - The
Dallas Stars could have been down about their early performance against St. Louis on Wednesday. Fortunately, all that matters, especially this time of year, is the accumulation of points in the standings.
Bill Guerin scored with 1:30 remaining in the third period and Marty Turco came up with several big stops, as the Stars rallied for a 2-2 tie against the Blues in a battle of division leaders.
Guerin added an assist, while Mike Modano had a goal and the 600th helper of his career for the Pacific-leading Stars, who are unbeaten in 16 of their last 17 games (12-1-4). Turco, 9-0-4 since December 29, made 22 saves.
Dallas Drake and Keith Tkachuk scored first-period goals and Brent Johnson stopped 27 shots for the Blues, the Central's top-team.
Guerin tied the game with his 23rd goal of the season. Modano passed the puck from the left circle to the right circle to Sergei Zubov, who then shifted the puck to the slot. That's when Guerin unleashed a one-timer past Johnson.
"We felt if we got one and made it 2-1 we could make a game out of it," Modano said of the comeback. "We didn't allow them too many shots after that. Defensively we were good, we just had a bad start."
Modano joined Jeremy Roenick as the only U.S.-born players in NHL history to amass 400 goals and 600 assists and the 44th player overall to achieve that feat. He also became just the 61st player in NHL history to collect 600 assists.
Turco made several big stops in the contest, including a save on Tkachuk on a breakaway in the opening seconds of overtime. The Dallas netminder made six saves in the extra session and helped the Stars hold off a St. Louis power play over the final 3:28 of the game as Niko Kapanen was whistled for a double-minor high-sticking penalty.
Turco also stopped Steve Martins on a breakaway with just over eight minutes left in the second period.
