Taylor trying to shake injury, slump

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Fred Taylor may have a reduced role the rest of the season for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Taylor has 16 carries for 11 yards in the last five games, starting two of them and missing the other three with a bruised right foot.

He returned from injury Sunday against Indianapolis, but gave way to Greg Jones for much of the second half as the Jaguars tried to rally from a 26-3 deficit.

Coach Jack Del Rio said the two backs will continue to share time, and Taylor agreed with the decision Wednesday.

``I understand how maybe some of my reps probably were taken away,'' Taylor said. ``That's what the game called for. Everybody wants to get me into this, 'Well, what's happening with you? Are you being demoted or something like that? People are asking me why I didn't play. That's what the game situation and the personnel called for.

``The coach's mentality is if it's not broke, don't fix it, and we've been on a win streak. Me, as unselfish as I can be, I never want to interfere with that. We've been winning with a certain formula. All I want to do is win. If it calls for me to take less reps here or there, that's fine.''

The Jaguars (9-4) host the struggling San Francisco 49ers (2-11) on Sunday. Jacksonville could secure a wild-card berth, but only if Denver also wins and Pittsburgh, Kansas City and San Diego lose.

If the Jags are able to clinch a spot in the playoffs for the first time since 1999, Taylor said he might consider resting in hopes of getting closer to full speed.

``I feel like I'm healthy, mainly because I'm able to do more than I have been able to do over the last three or four weeks,'' he said. ``I always feel like I can go out at any time and play. At my best? I don't know. But I feel like I'm healthy. Not at 100 percent. I doubt anybody in the league is right now. But I do feel like I'm healthy enough where I can get out there and be productive.''

Taylor has 625 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 155 carries this season. Jones has 531 yards and four scores on 16 fewer attempts.

``I think Greg has proven that he can play both fullback and halfback for us, and we can be productive using him,'' Del Rio said. ``And obviously, Fred is a very talented player. So we're going to continue utilizing our weapons.''

Taylor had surgery in January to repair two partially torn knee ligaments and was limited in training camp and in the preseason. He was slow to return to form, but ran for 132 yards against Cincinnati in early October and then had 165 yards on the ground three weeks later at St. Louis.

But he's done little since, mostly because of the injury, but partly because of Jones' emergence.

``I don't want to start doubting myself,'' Taylor said. ``I don't think I'm off a whole lot with what we've been doing offensively. It's just that I hadn't really been in there, and sometimes that can bring doubt, especially if you aren't as successful as you hope to be. My thing is just to practice and try to get better. Play, play, play, practice, practice and everything will work itself out.''Copyright © 2005 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
