Titans Try to End Seahawks' Run

(My Sportsbook) - The Seattle Seahawks dominated their previous two opponents and hope to make the Titans the third straight victim this Sunday in Tennessee.

The Seahawks have won nine straight games and the last two victories have been very impressive. Seattle routed the Eagles, 42-0, in Philadelphia on Monday night two weeks ago and followed that up with this past Sunday's 41-3 home triumph over the San Francisco 49ers.

Seattle has already clinched the NFC West title, but still has motivation. The Seahawks can clinch a first-round bye in the postseason with a win and can secure homefield advantage throughout the NFC playoffs with a victory and a Chicago loss.

The Titans, on the other hand, have been relegated to spoiler status.

Tennessee has picked up wins in two of the last three weeks, but those victories have come against San Francisco and Houston. The Titans edged the Texans, 13-10, last Sunday.

SERIES HISTORY

Seattle leads the all-time series with Tennessee, 8-4, and has won the last four meetings between the clubs. The Seahawks were 20-18 home winners when the teams last met, in 1998, and also won regular season games in the series in 1994, 1996, and 1997. The Hawks' last loss in the series came in 1993, when they went to Houston and were defeated by the then-Oilers, 24-14. Tennessee will be meeting Seattle for the first time as the Titans, and the Seahawks will be visiting Tennessee for the first time.

In addition to the regular season series, the franchises have met once in the postseason, a 23-20 overtime win for the then-Houston Oilers in a 1997 AFC First-Round Playoff.

Tennessee head coach Jeff Fisher is 0-4 in his career against Seattle, including 0-1 in home games. The Seahawks' Mike Holmgren is 2-0 in his career against the Titans/Oilers, with both games dating back to his tenure in Green Bay (1992-98). Holmgren is 1-0 head-to-head against Fisher in his career.

SEAHAWKS OFFENSE VS. TITANS DEFENSE

The Seahawks racked up 438 total yards of offense against the 49ers and they did the biggest damage on the ground. Seattle pounded out 183 rushing yards and held the ball for over 36 minutes. Shaun Alexander (1,496 yards, 23 TD) led the attack with 108 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries. Alexander leads the NFL in rushing yards and touchdowns. Leonard Weaver (80 yards) carried the ball five times for 41 yards and Maurice Morris (226 yards, 1 TD) added 22 yards on seven attempts. Seattle is third in rushing offense this season with 154.1 yards per game.

The Titans were helpless at stopping the run against Houston. The Texans gained 152 yards on the ground with Domanick Davis pacing the attack with 139 yards on 22 carries. Linebacker Keith Bulluck (112 tackles, 4 sacks, 2 INT) posted a team-high 11 tackles, while tackle Albert Haynesworth (45 tackles, 2 sacks) notched four stops. Tennessee is 16th in the NFL in rushing defense with 107.5 yards surrendered per contest.

Seattle's passing offense was very efficient against San Francisco last week. Matt Hasselbeck (2,930 yards, 19 TD, 9 INT) completed 21-of-25 passes for 226 yards with four touchdowns and one interception. Hasselbeck's passer rating of 127.3 was his highest of the season. Bobby Engram (57 receptions, 640 yards, 3 TD) ended with six catches for 65 yards and two touchdowns. Joe Jurevicius (48 receptions, 621 yards, 8 TD) notched four receptions for 63 yards and a TD. The Seahawks will get No. 1 wide receiver Darrell Jackson back this week. Jackson has been sidelined since a Week 4 loss in Washington with torn meniscus cartilage in his right knee. The Seahawks are 13th in the NFL this season, averaging 221.2 passing yards.

Tennessee fared better at stopping the pass last week, holding David Carr to 116 yards and a touchdown through the air. Davis also led Houston receivers with seven catches for 50 yards and a touchdown. Bulluck and Haynesworth each posted a sack for the Titans, while safety Tank Williams (62 tackles, 1 INT0 led the secondary with 10 stops. Rookie cornerback Pacman Jones (46 tackles) logged a career-high eight tackles in the win. The Titans are 15th in the league with 199.8 passing yards surrendered every week.

TITANS OFFENSE VS. SEAHAWKS DEFENSE

The Titans used a running back by committee approach last week and it wasn't entirely successful. Tennessee rushed for 93 total yards on 30 carries with Chris Brown pacing the attack with 53 yards on 16 attempts. Brown leads the Titans with 777 yards and five touchdown on the ground this season, but is questionable this week with an elbow injury Travis Henry (222 yards) added 19 yards on eight carries, while quarterback Steve McNair (118 yards, 1 TD) scrambled four times for 17 yards. Both Henry and McNair are questionable with ankle injuries. Tennessee is averaging 96.4 rushing yards per game (20th in NFL).

The Seahawks surrendered just 113 yards of total offense to the 49ers last week and 62 of those came on the ground. Kevan Barlow led San Fran's rushing attack with 33 yards on 11 carries. Linebacker Leroy Hill (47 tackles, 7 sacks) led Seattle with six tackles, while defensive tackle Rocky Bernard (43 tackles, 8 1/2 sacks) added five stops. Seattle has the league's 10th-ranked rushing defense this year with 101.4 yards surrendered per game.

The Titans didn't gain huge amounts of yardage through the air last week, but McNair (2,817 yards, 14 TD, 9 INT) did turn in a solid game. He completed 18- of-30 passes for 208 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions. McNair completed passes to nine different players in the game. Henry (9 receptions, 106 yards) had three catches for 54 yards, while his running partner Brown (25 receptions, 327 yards, 2 TD) added three grabs for 49 yards. Tight end Ben Troupe (40 receptions, 325 yards, 3 TD) chipped in three receptions for 28 yards. Tennessee is 12th in the NFL with 226.8 passing yards per game.

Seattle's defense made things very difficult for 49ers rookie quarterback Alex Smith last week. Smith completed just 9-of-22 passes for 77 yards with no touchdowns and an interception. He was also sacked four times and fumbled the ball three times. Defensive tackle Marcus Tubbs (30 tackles, 4 sacks) was very disruptive and ended with four tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble. Rookie linebacker Lofa Tatupu (94 tackles, 4 sacks, 3 INT) added four stops, a sack and an interception. Overall this season, Seattle is 18th in the league with 202.5 passing yards allowed per contest.

OVERALL ANALYSIS

The Seahawks have something significant to play for this week with a first- week bye and homefield advantage throughout the playoffs still up in the air. That's bad news for Tennessee, which isn't going to like playing the spoiler this week. If Domanick Davis and Houston were able to run all over the Titans defense, then just think what Alexander and the Seahawks are going to accomplish.

My Sportsbook Predicted Outcome: Seahawks 31, Titans 17
