Detroit, MI (My Sportsbook) - The Detroit Red Wings try to put the brakes on a six-game winless skid tonight when they invite the San Jose Sharks to Joe Louis Arena.
Detroit is 0-4-2 in its last six tries, including a home-and-home sweep to the rival Colorado Avalanche. After a 1-0 home loss on Thursday, the Wings dropped a 5-3 decision Saturday in Denver. The Red Wings held a 3-2 lead into the third period, but the Avs reeled off three unanswered tallies to provide the difference.
Tomas Holmstrom had two goals wasted, and Brendan Shanahan also found the net. Curtis Joseph allowed four scores on 35 shots and fell to 0-5-1 in his last six starts. Cujo has been beaten three times or more in all but one of those outings.
Brett Hull was held off the scoreboard for the seventh straight match, and remains stuck on 699 goals. Hull is one shy of becoming the sixth member of the 700-club, joining Wayne Gretzky (894), Gordie Howe (801), Marcel Dionne (731), Phil Esposito (717) and Mike Gartner (708) in the distinguished group.
The Wings, who are 1-5-2-1 in their last nine tries overall, sit second in the Central Division with 65 points -- five behind the St. Louis Blues. Detroit, 0-2-2 in its last four home tilts, will host Buffalo on Thursday.
San Jose, meanwhile, has lost its last two games, including Saturday's 4-1 defeat in St. Louis. Rookie Jonathan Cheechoo provided a 1-0 first-period advantage, but it was all St. Louis from then on. Evgeni Nabokov allowed three goals on 25 shots as he made his seventh straight start between the pipes.
Tonight's tilt is the third installment of a seven-game road trip for San Jose, which is 1-5-1-1 in its last eight away games. The Sharks will visit Columbus on Wednesday.
Detroit is 2-0 against San Jose this season, and 6-1-1 in the last eight meetings. The Sharks are 0-2-1 in their last three trips to Motown, and 2-19-1 in the last 22 clashes at The Joe.
