San Diego, CA (My Sportsbook) - San Diego Padres closer Trevor Hoffman could miss Opening Day, according to general manager Kevin Towers. Hoffman may require a second operation on his pitching shoulder that would keep him out for at least two months, the general manager said. The righthander underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder last October. The 35-year-old Hoffman, a ten-year major league veteran, also had surgery on his right shoulder before the 1995 season. He went 2-5 with a 2.73 ERA and had 38 saves in 2002, which stopped a string of four consecutive seasons with at least 40 saves. Hoffman has 352 career saves, fifth-most in big-league history. Hoffman, who has never been on the disabled list, is expected to be ready in time for spring training.
