(My Sportsbook) - It became apparent early on in 2005 that fans of the
Houston Texans would not have much to look forward to until after the season, when there is expected to be a flurry of activity for a franchise that has taken a huge step backwards.
Entering the season, fans in Houston had high hopes and rightfully so, as the team had improved in each of its three years of existence. Some people even picked them to make the playoffs after last year's 7-9 performance. If that goal seemed a bit lofty in a stacked AFC, then a .500 mark for sure should have been in the cards.
However, things obviously have not gone as planned, and the Texans are about to embark on an offseason that could find them looking for a new head coach as well as replacing a franchise quarterback which the team selected with their first-ever draft pick in 2002.
"When you're a coach or a player, you never think about that kind of stuff. From a coaching standpoint, your job is to try to win every week."
On Saturday, the Texans' miserable season continued, as they blew a three- point halftime lead and allowed the Jacksonville Jaguars to score 28 of the game's final 35 points in a 38-20 loss at Reliant Stadium.
David Carr went 19-of-29 for 295 yards with two touchdowns and one pick for the Texans (2-13), who have lost seven of their last eight games and are currently first in line to get the No. 1 pick in the 2006 Draft.
Andre Johnson finished with seven catches for 119 yards and a score in the loss.
Houston, though, might be able to give its fans something to root for this coming week. However, most fans in Texans land will probably be hoping for a Houston loss this week when the team closes its season against the equally woeful San Francisco 49ers.
"I think there's probably a lot of that sentiment outside (the team), but if you polled our team or our coaching staff, we want to go to San Francisco and finish this season - as difficult as it's been - on a positive note," said Capers.
If Houston loses, it will finish 2-14 and guarantee itself the No. 1 pick in this April's draft. Things, though, could get interesting if they win, as then the 49ers and Texans would both be 3-13. Losses this week by the New York Jets, New Orleans Saints and Green Bay Packers would leave them all at 3-13 too.
If teams are tied when determining draft order, the team with the easier strength of schedule wins any tie. Division and conference records and head- to-head competition have no bearing. If two or more teams are tied in strength of schedule, a coin toss decides the first pick.
Even with a win, though, the Texans should get at least the second pick. If the scenario occurs that all five teams finish at 3-13, then the Saints would probably receive the first pick, with Houston at No. 2.
RECORD-SETTING SEASON FOR BROWN
Place kicker Kris Brown has recorded a team-record 97 points this season.
Despite missing seven field goals, including one that would have beaten Tennessee two weeks ago, Brown is one kick short of 26 for the season, which is the second most in his career. He booted 30 field goals for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2001.
ORR CLOSING IN ON RECORD
Shantee Orr needs two sacks this Sunday to break Jeff Posey's record of eight, set in 2002.
The Texans also are two sacks from breaking the team record of 35, set in 2002.
SACK TALLY
Carr was sacked four times, raising his league-leading total to 68 for the season. Carr has been brought down 14 times over the past three weeks and has been sacked 24 more times than the next person, Dallas' Drew Bledsoe.
Since entering the NFL in 2002, Carr has been sacked an NFL-high 208 times.
INJURIES
The Texans will be without defensive end Gary Walker this week after he suffered a torn triceps in Saturday's loss. He will likely be place on injured reserve at some point during the week.
However, Travis Johnson, who has been inactive the last two weeks with a back injury, could return this week.
Also, running backs Domanick Davis (knee) and Jonathan Wells (thigh) will be limited in practice this week.
UP NEXT
The Texans will visit 49ers this week in the first-ever matchup between the two teams.
