Baltimore, MD (My Sportsbook) - The Baltimore Orioles avoided salary arbitration with pitcher Sidney Ponson and agreed to a one-year contract with the righthanded starter on Friday. The 26-year old Ponson went 7-9 with a 4.09 ERA in 2002. The Orioles went 17-11 in his 28 starts and he lasted six or more innings 22 times. The five-year pro has compiled a 41-53 career record with a 4.74 ERA in 146 games. Ponson has made 20 or more starts in each of his five seasons with the Orioles. Ponson joins Jerry Hairston, Gary Matthews, Jr. and pitcher B.J. Ryan as players that agreed to one-year deals and avoided arbitration with the club.
