Davie, FL (My Sportsbook) -
Miami Dolphins quarterback Jay Fiedler will be sidelined at least a month after fracturing his right thumb late in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 24-22 victory over the
Denver Broncos.
Fiedler injured the thumb on the next-to-last drive while throwing a pass to Ricky Williams. He apparently came down on a helmet and felt something loose. Fiedler underwent surgery on Monday to help stabilize the fracture and according to head athletic trainer Kevin O'Neill, the recovery period will take at least a month.
"It will be somewhat frustrating, just because I'm a competitor and want to be out on the field and helping the team," Fiedler said. "But I'll help in the best way that I know how right now. I have a little bit of experience being a coach, so I plan on being a coach for however many weeks this keeps me out."
Following the injury, Fiedler engineered a five-play, 39-yard drive for the winning score. He completed a 22-yard pass to Dedric Ward that went through the hands of Denver linebacker John Mobley and gave Miami a first down at the Broncos' 35-yard line with 11 seconds left. Olindo Mare then entered the contest and drilled a game-winning, 53-yard field goal.
Fiedler ended the contest 19-of-29 for 210 yards and was picked off once. In six games this season, he has completed 112-of-176 passes for 1,289 yards, with nine touchdowns and six interceptions.
Ray Lucas is expected to take over the starting role at quarterback. He has yet to throw a pass this season. In 1999 while with the New York Jets, Lucas replaced an injured Vinny Testaverde for nine games and posted a 6-3 record during that span.
"I think he will do tremendously," Fiedler said. "He had a great preseason. He's fresh and ready to go. I'm certainly going to do whatever I can to help him out during the week in the film room, on the field, and certainly on Sundays."
