(My Sportsbook) - Sometimes certain teams just have your number. Detroit Red Wings goaltender Curtis Joseph has to be getting that feeling regarding this year's
Vancouver Canucks.
Cujo allowed four goals on 18 shots in a 4-1 loss November 22 to the Canucks, and another four on 34 shots in a 4-1 defeat January 19. So when his team grabbed a three-goal lead early in the third period of Tuesday's contest with Vancouver, he had to like his chances of getting his first win of the season over the Northwest Division leaders.
Well, maybe he will get another chance at the Canucks in the playoffs because Vancouver pulled off an improbable 4-3 come-from-behind overtime win at Joe Louis Arena, scoring three times in the final 15 minutes before Marek Malik won it with 1:58 to play in the extra-session.
"It's frustrating," Joseph said. "It's very frustrating."
Leading by two, Luc Robitaille netted his seventh-goal of the season 2:29 into the final period to give the Red Wings a seemingly comfortable three-goal cushion. Furthering Detroit's chances, Robitaille's tally chased reigning NHL Player of the Week goaltender Dan Cloutier to the bench in favor of Canucks' backup Peter Skudra.
Even Vancouver head coach Marc Crawford did not like his team's chances at that point.
"I thought the game was over, to be honest," Crawford said.
Trevor Linden and Trent Klatt then got the Canucks on the board before Markus Naslund evened the game with just under 25 seconds remaining in regulation.
Joseph stopped Mattias Ohlund's shot from the left wing and the puck appeared to be headed toward the right corner, but instead hit the skate of referee Don Van Massenhoven. It caromed directly to Naslund, who still had a difficult angle below the right circle but was able to beat a scrambling Joseph for his 38th goal.
"I could barely get a foot on it, let alone control the rebound," Joseph said of Ohlund's shot. "It's just one of those where they come from behind the net and spin you around. But that's legal, I guess. I thought it was goaltender interference, but I don't think there is any in this league."
Vancouver continued the pressure in the extra session and won it with 1:58 to play. Brendan Morrison picked up the puck from Linden and drew three Detroit defenders as he crossed the Red Wing blue line. Morrison drove toward the net along the right wing and backhanded a pass to the left circle for a charging Malik, who snuck a shot past a sliding Joseph for his fourth goal to win it.
"When you're winning going into the third like we were, you want to win," Joseph said. "You've got to win. That's all there is to it."
