In Wednesday's game, David Ortiz smacked a two-run homer in the bottom of the 12th inning to lift the Twins to a 7-5 victory. Mike Cuddyer homered and finished 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored for the AL Central-champion Twins, who took the first two games of the three-game set at the Metrodome.
Torii Hunter had three hits with an RBI and a run scored for the Twins, who have won seven of their last 10 contests. J.C. Romero (9-2) pitched the last 1 1/3 innings for the win. Rick Reed got the start and allowed four runs on nine hits in five innings.
Ellis Burks went 4-for-6 with a homer and three runs scored for the Indians, who have lost three of their last four.
Jim Thome hit two homers to reach 50 on the season for Cleveland, tying Albert Belle's franchise record set in 1995. Thome, who belted 49 last season, has reached base in 51 straight games, which is the longest streak this season in the AL and third longest in the majors.
Dave Maurer got Cristian Guzman to ground out to start the 12th, but Hunter followed with a base hit to center. Ortiz stepped up and lifted his 20th homer of the season to right for the win.
Maurer (0-1) was saddled with the loss after allowing two runs on two hits in one-third of an inning.
Brad Radke takes the mound tonight for the Twins, aiming for his fourth win in five starts. He had a three-game win streak snapped on Saturday after allowing six runs on nine hits over three frames in a 14-4 loss to Chicago. In his last three starts, he has yielded 10 runs over 16 innings.
Radke is facing the Indians for the first time this season. Lifetime, he is 5-14 with a 6.27 ERA versus Cleveland.
In nine starts at home, he is 5-1 with a 3.02 ERA.
Countering for the Tribe is Ryan Drese, who is 0-1 in his last four starts. In that span, the righthander has surrendered 15 runs over 20 1/3 innings. On September 18, he allowed four runs on seven hits during five frames in a 6-4 win at Boston. The Indians are 4-1 in his last five starts.
Drese is 1-2 with a 9.16 ERA in four starts against the Twins this season. Tonight is Drese's fifth career start against Minnesota.
On the road in 2002, he has gone 6-5 with a 5.83 ERA in 14 starts.
Minnesota leads the season series, 10-7, with the Indians. However, the Indians are 21-15 against the Twins since the start of the 2001 campaign.
