Seattle, WA (My Sportsbook) - In a blockbuster deal Thursday, the Seattle SuperSonics traded guards Gary Payton and Desmond Mason to the
Milwaukee Bucks in exchange for guards Ray Allen, Kevin Ollie and Ronald Murray and a conditional first-round draft pick in the 2003 NBA Draft. The two clubs face each other Friday at KeyArena.
In a separate deal before the 3 p.m. (et) trade deadline, the Sonics sent guard Kenny Anderson to the New Orleans Hornets for forward/center Elden Campbell.
The 34-year-old Payton, who is in his 13th NBA season, had spent his entire career with Seattle. He was selected by the Sonics with the second overall pick in the 1990 NBA Draft.
Payton led Seattle in scoring and assists through 52 games this season, averaging 20.8 points and 8.8 assists per contest. He leaves the Sonics as the franchise's all-time leader in points, assists and steals.
In 999 career games, he has averaged 18.2 points, 7.4 assists and 2.1 steals per outing.
Payton will be re-united with head coach George Karl, who guided the Sonics from 1991-98 with the nine-time All-Star as his point guard. Seattle advanced to the NBA Finals during the 1995-96 season, when it fell to Chicago in six games.
Payton, known as a defensive specialist, was voted the NBA Defensive Player of the Year in 1996. He was also a member of the gold medal-winning U.S. Olympic teams in 1996 and 2000.
Allen, 27, is in his seventh NBA campaign. He has only played for the Bucks and departs Milwaukee as the club's leading scorer this year. In 47 contests, he averaged 21.3 points per game.
Allen was chosen by the Minnesota Timberwolves with the fifth pick overall in the 1996 NBA Draft. His draft rights were then traded along with a future first-round pick to Milwaukee on June 26, 1996 for the draft rights to guard Stephon Marbury.
In 494 career games, Allen has averaged 19.6 points per contest. He was also a member of the gold medal-winning U.S. Olympic team in 2000.
Mason, in his third NBA season, was averaging 14.1 points and 6.4 rebounds for Seattle this season. He also played in all 52 games.
"Seldom do you have the opportunity to add a Hall of Fame player to your lineup," Milwaukee General Manager Ernie Grunfeld said. "Gary (Payton) is one of the league's best players at both ends of the floor, and he has a competitive nature matched by very few players in this league. At the same time, we're also adding a very good young player in Desmond Mason who improves our athleticism, and makes us an even more versatile ball club.
"Naturally, you don't make a trade of this magnitude without giving up a great player in return. Ray Allen is probably the best long-range shooter in the NBA, a three-time All-Star who has had a great deal to do with the success we've enjoyed. We would also be remiss if we didn't acknowledge Kevin Ollie's contributions. He hasn't been here long, but he's been a true professional and a very big part of our success this season."
The 30-year-old Ollie participated in all 53 games for Milwaukee and posted averages of 5.7 points and 3.4 assists per contest. Ollie has also spent time with Dallas, Orlando, Sacramento, Philadelphia, New Jersey, Chicago and Indiana during his six-year NBA career.
Murray, a rookie, averaged just 1.9 points in 12 games this season for Milwaukee.
Anderson, currently on the injured list with lower back spasms, is playing in his 12th NBA campaign. In 38 games this season, he is averaging 6.1 points and 3.2 assists. Over 748 career contests, Anderson has averaged 13.6 points and 6.5 assists. He has also had stints with New Jersey, the Charlotte Hornets, Portland and Boston.
Campbell, 34, is in the midst of his 13th NBA season. He was averaging only 7.2 points in 41 games for New Orleans this year. Campbell played the first eight-plus seasons of his career with the Los Angeles Lakers before being dealt to Charlotte along with Eddie Jones on March 10, 1999 in exchange for Glen Rice, J.R. Reid and B.J. Armstrong.
Campbell has career averages of 11.1 points and 6.3 rebounds per game.
