Anaheim, CA (My Sportsbook) - The
New York Rangers try to make it two wins in a row tonight when they skate into Anaheim to face off with the Mighty Ducks at the Pond.
After a two-game losing streak, the Rangers grinded their way to a 4-2 win over the Minnesota Wild on Wednesday. Mark Messier and Brian Leetch each had a goal and an assist to lead the Rangers. Bobby Holik and Sandy McCarthy also scored for New York, which is just to 3-7-1-1 in its last 12 games.
Mike Dunham turned aside 27 shots for the Rangers, who are in danger of missing the postseason for a franchise-record sixth straight season. The Blueshirts, with 57 points, currently occupy the 11th spot in the East and are seven points back of the final playoff spot with only 19 games remaining.
New York, which is 2-5-1 in its last eight road games, will be playing the fourth leg of a six-game trip tonight and is 12-15-4-1 away from home this season. The venture will conclude with stops in Colorado and New Jersey.
Anaheim, on the other hand, has vaulted to sixth place in the Western Conference playoff race with 68 points thanks to an 8-2-1 run in its last 11 games.
The Ducks enter tonight's contest on the heels of a 2-0 shutout over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Wednesday. Jean-Sebastien Giguere recorded his seventh blanking of the season with 26 saves, while Paul Kariya scored his 22nd goal of the season and Steve Rucchin added an empty-net score for the Ducks, who are 5-1-1 in their last seven.
Giguere made 10 saves in the first period, 11 in the second and turned aside five shots in the third for his 15th career shutout. Giguere's seventh shutout of the season eclipsed Guy Hebert's franchise mark of six. His 26 wins marks a career-high and leaves him just five shy of the Ducks single-season club record (Hebert had 31 in 1998-99).
Anaheim, which is unbeaten (5-0-1) in its last six home games, is 16-7-6-1 at the Pond on the year and will close a three-game homestand tonight.
The Ducks are 7-2-1 in their last 10 meetings with the Rangers, who are a lowly 1-6 in their last seven trips to Anaheim.
