New York, NY (My Sportsbook) - Pavel Bure netted two goals in his first game of the season to lead the
New York Rangers to a 5-4 victory over the
Toronto Maple Leafs at Madison Square Garden. Bure, who also added an assist, missed the first three contests due to illness.
Matthew Barnaby and Tom Poti each had a goal and an assist for the Rangers, who snapped a two-game slide. Eric Lindros, who was on the ice after serving a one-game suspension for high-sticking, was ejected in the second period for boarding.
Tomas Kaberle and Nik Antropov each scored a goal and handed out an assist for the Maple Leafs, who have dropped three in a row. Toronto lost in the Garden for the first time in three tries.
Mike Richter stopped 29-of-33 shots for the Rangers, while Toronto netminder Trevor Kidd made 23 saves.
Down 1-0 in the second period, the Rangers had the momentum swing in their favor after killing off Lindros' five-minute penalty.
Lindros was chasing Wade Belak, who had the puck behind his own net. Belak fell and Lindros fell against him, knocking his head into the boards. Lindros was whistled for the major penalty and also saddled with the game misconduct.
Barnaby started things off with a breakaway goal to tie the game with 7:36 left to play in the second. Tom Fitzgerald turned the puck over in the Rangers' zone and Barnaby took off the other way, beating Kidd stickside with a wrister.
Poti gave New York the 2-1 lead on the power play with 2:20 left to go in the frame, when his one-timer from the right circle beat Kidd glove side.,
Bure made it a 3-1 game just 41 seconds later when he streaked down the right wing to elude Toronto defenseman Aki Berg and one-timed a perfect feed from Barnaby to beat Kidd for the two-goal lead.
Darcy Tucker got one back for the Leafs on the power play with just two-tenths of a second left in the second. Mats Sundin took a shot from the left circle which Richter saved, but Tucker, standing in front, was there to poke in the rebound.
Bure's second goal of the game restored the Rangers' two-goal lead 6:49 into the third period. On the power play, Brian Leetch had the puck at the top of the left circle and made a perfect no-look pass to the bottom right circle for Bure, who beat a sliding Kidd with a one-timer.
Kaberle made it 4-3 with 6:10 left in the game when Richter collided with his own defenseman and Kaberle had an easy shot from the slot.
The Rangers answered just 17 seconds later when Bobby Holik had the puck at the left wing and waited for Jyrki Lumme to go down before sliding a cross- crease pass over to Mikael Samuelsson, who easily deposited the score.
Antropov made it a one-goal game again with 4:10 left to play when he took a shot from the slot and raced to get his own rebound, beating Richter high to the stick side.
The Leafs pulled Kidd in the last minute, but New York held on for the win.
Jonas Hoglund gave the Maple Leafs a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal 6:17 into the opening period. Kaberle had the puck at the middle point and faked a slap shot before finding Hoglund at the lower left circle. The right wing slid the puck under a diving Richter for his first tally of the young season.
