San Jose, CA (My Sportsbook) - Teemu Selanne's goal midway through the third period turned out to be the difference as the San Jose Sharks held on the beat the
Edmonton Oilers, 4-3, at the Shark Tank.
Owen Nolan added a shorthanded tally and Vincent Damphousse scored the 400th goal of his career, as the Sharks registered their first win of the year after starting the season with losses to Detroit and Vancouver.
Vesa Toskala, who was making his first NHL start, turned away 22 of the 25 shots he faced.
Anson Carter and Mike Comrie each had a goal and an assist for the Oilers, who lost their second straight to end a brief three-game road trip. After a win in Nashville last Saturday, Edmonton dropped a 3-0 decision to the Dallas Stars on Tuesday.
Tommy Salo stopped 27 of the 31 shots he faced.
San Jose jumped to an early 1-0 lead when Damphousse found the back of the net with his milestone goal just 1:06 into the game. Scott Hannan let a slapper go from the left point and his shot deflected off Nolan before sitting untouched at the right post. Damphousse jumped on the loose puck and banged home his third goal of the year,
The Oilers bounced back with a power-play tally to tie the game at the 5:39 mark of the first. Niinimaa took a feed from Jiri Dopita in the high slot before wristing his first goal of the season past Toskala.
Sturm gave the Sharks a 2-1 lead with 2:37 left in the first when he knocked a rebound past a sprawled Salo. Patrick Marleau started the scoring play with a steal behind the Oiler net before sliding a pass to Mike Rathje at the right circle. Rathje's wrister bounced off Salo's pads to Sturm, who banged home the carom from the side of the crease.
Edmonton rallied to once again tie the game with 5:17 gone in the middle period. Carter tangled with a Sharks defender between the top of the circles but still managed to gather a bouncing puck. He then sent a soft wrister on goal that went through the legs of Ryan Smyth, who was parked at the top of the crease. Due to Smyth's screen, Carter's shot managed to squirt through Toskala as he fell back into his own net.
The Sharks regained a one-goal lead, 3-2, on the strength of Nolan's tally with 8:19 left in the second. Adam Graves scooped up a lose puck in the neutral zone and crossed the Edmonton blue line before slipping a blind backhand pass to an unmarked Nolan, who had sprinted up to join the play. Nolan then cut to the net on his forehand and slid a shot under the pads of a sliding Salo.
Selanne pumped his second goal of the year past Salo with 10:26 remaining in the contest. The speedy winger took a cross-ice feed in stride through the neutral zone before spraying to a stop just inside the Edmonton blue line. Selanne's quick pause left him unmarked, and he responded by taking two short strides into the right circle before ripping a slapper under the arm of Salo.
With just under four minutes remaining in the contest, the Oilers cut the deficit to 4-3 with their second power-play goal of the game. Carter corralled the puck behind the net and fired a quick pass to Comrie, who was standing alone at the top of the crease. Comrie redirected Carter's pass through the pads of Toskala to give the Oilers late life.
Edmonton pulled Salo with a minute left in the game and Toskala had to come up big as Carter fired a shot on net through traffic from the left circle with just two ticks remaining.
Damphousse became the 71st NHL player to reach the 400-goal plateau.
Prior to the win, San Jose was the only NHL team that had not recorded a point in the standings.
